Hi,

I have a black front splitter on my car which picks up stone chips very easily.
I've repainted it around three times with no issues.

This week, after painting I had a ring of paint, about the size of a 5p piece, which has raised. Hard to describe, but almost looks like a crease in the paint. Sanded it down to plastic, primered and resprayed and came back about 3 times as big. Sanded back to plastic, skim of filler, primer and top coat and its now back but around 4 inches x 2 inches in size.

Any idea what is causing this and how to get rid? The rest of the splitter is fine.

Cheers.

Could be some form of contamination (silicone is a favourite for causing 'fish eye'). Wipe the splitter down with panel wipe before the primer stage next time.

Possible reaction with the old paint underneath. On repairs happens when the new paint solvent attacks the feathered edge of the old.
Choices are either to remove the lot - back to bare plastic & use a plastic primer - or a coat of isolator.
Have a look here, should put you off painting for life!eek

yeah might be time to strip it back...plus less paint will make the next batch of chips seem not so bad

its possibly the solvent getting under the edge of where youre rubbing it down

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Looking at that datasheet, I have a case of "lifting and wrinkling". Does seem to be a reaction against the feathered edge.

This morning I've taken it back to bare plastic, panel wiped and 3 coats of plastic primer. Seems to be holding ok at the moment. I'll let it dry overnight and try a topcoat tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Cheers
Lee.
