Aerial videography (with car content)

Hi,

We have recently got into aerial video and photography with a difference. We build and fly remote controlled 'drones' with cameras attached.

As a farewell to our old set up, we did a little edit of some footage we took over the past month, including some car 'chase' shots.

Yes, we fly FPV (first person view) through video goggles that receive the picture from the cameras on the drones.
You can see the 'pilot' flying with the goggles from the passenger seat of the Kit Car towards the end of the video.

What are the restrictions on flying drones over public land? Do you need clearance or a hell of a lot of insurance?

Both, we have insurance, and need CAA approval for some flights.

It really depends where we're flying, but obviously we don't take risks with it - after getting a finger caught in a prop I can vouch for the fact they can do some serious damage.

Great video, I take it from the propellers you can see that it's a quad-copter, if so what kind? Also interested in what type of camera you use?

Thanks - Most of the footage on that video is done from our home built tricopters. We also have planes, quads and others though.

Camera wise we use the Sony NEX5N when we need quality- the new set up we are just finishing is built around the Sony, but most of the stuff in the video above is just Go Pro.

Thanks, always thought there would be a bit of money in it with estate agents for high end properties for arial fly rounds (I'm sure you'd be ble to charge a couple of hundred quid for arial shots) or for fly over of golf courses but always wondered about the clearance issues.

Yep I'll bet there's a lot of money in those glyphs.

I've heard of one company using them for things like powerstation chimneys and other difficult to inspect places (raher than get a rope access team out).
My first though was 'wonder if they're looking for staff?'. It looks cool but I was then informed that someone else flys it.

My only concern is the limited range of WIFI although the control ability through - although controlability from an IPAD is interesting. Onboard camera and the quality doesn't look too bad considering it's size.
