Made an arse of myself stalling the beast for the first time just now in a junction.

Restarted and got to my destination 2 minutes down the road. Started to get a very bad smell of plastic burning so had a look under the bonet, and all looks ok, but there is a definate smell of burning from the rear of the block (1997 4.2).

So apart from having the fire extinguiser to hand on my return journey, any ideas if this is one of those "never mind that" situations or should I be more concerned?

Anybody else experienced the same burning smell, from a quick restart?

Thanks

uh-oh.... could be a number of things....
but a burning smell could mean anything....

something leaking on the headers
some pipes fallen off and burning against the headers

If the smell persists, I'd definitely recommend dropping by a mech to have a quick check-up!

Hope its nothing more than a squirrel somehow gotten stuck in your headers and its cooking - if so, get the barbecue source out and celebrate!

My "lastic burning smell" turned out to be the fuse link holders melting. Does the Cerb use the same 100a fused links? Might be worth a check.

Just had mine back from Castles. Turns out that the burning smell I'd had from new was the exhaust manifolds slowly working their way through the inner wing. All under warranty so not a problem, but Rob was saying that they are built so tight and rely on a bit of wrapped heatshielding to alleviate it. I'd check you haven't had any sort of shift that is allowing the same to happen.

Have to say once again top marks to the boys at Castle for sorting the issue without any grief.

I've had two burning smells in mine.

First one turned out to be the windscreen wiper control box melting. The second was the headlight control box conector melting.

First one was fixed by replacing the connector and wiperbox and the second one was fixed by doing the soldering the wire direct modification.

Looks like I must have injested that squirrel.

No problems in 3 journeys since and looking under the bonnet can see nothing wrong

Just have to hope that it was a one-off event. Smelt just like burning saucepan handles.

Thanks for the help.

When your neighbour knocks at your door asking if you've seen their cat, just shake your head close the door and walk slowly away.
