I had a word with my son's insurer today.

My business car is dead. We work together, so I asked his insurer how much they would charge to add me as a named driver for thirty days. I'm an old fart on maximum no claims, no convictions and almost wholly sane, with a healthy disdain of the BBC, lawyers, estate agents, experts, Members of Parliament and all things socialist or green. The car in question is a diesel Volvo V70.

They want £75 per week, with an excess of £1000. That's a rate of £3,900 a year, just for little old me. My son's premium is around £1400, I think.

The insurer's rebuttal of my expression of incredulity and contempt? Their experience shows that short term named drivers don't bring in much by way of income, but might cost them a lot in claims.

Well, call me pedantic, but I thought that's what insurance was all about.

Not impressed...irked

Have you tried adding yourself as a permanent named driver? You never know it may end up cheaper overall.....

did you try asking them how much it would cost to add you for the remainder of the policy, if you are a much lower risk driver that would normally add minimal cost, or some times even reduce it the overall premium, you'd probably end up paying an admin fee but i'd be surprised if all in it would cost more than £75 total

What about using Dayinsure for 28 days?

Surely got to be cheaper than your current quote.

How soon is your car likely to be back on the road?

http://www.dayinsure.com/28-day-insurance.aspx

ETA:

Just got a quote for myself on my own car. 28 days, 05 Mondeo TDCI, Age 21 - £264. I'd imagine with you being a lot older it would be a lot less.

ETA Again: Changed my "DOB" to make me 51 - £124

So £960 for the year; how many years NCD has your son got? This will probably still be affecting the rate for any additional drivers, no matter how many years NCD you have.

What deal can you get on a hire car for 30 days? Presumably you could put it through your business as an expense and save the VAT too?

Thanks, but can't do that. We use the cars for long distance chauffeur work.

It's not. It's dead. It's passed on. It is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker. This...is a late Volvo. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. It's run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This....is an ex D5.

It's eaten its cylinder head. No-one knows why.

For commercial work carrying passengers it's going to be a bit more than a bog standard fully comp year policy.

rolleyes A mere detail that would have been useful in the first post!

To get a reference point, how much is your son paying on his own?

Even bearing in mind the type of use, considering the car is already insured for such use, the extra premiun does sound high.

It is a Volvo so it is probably just pining for the fjords.
