Project Taimar goldmember..
Discussion
Well
I took delivery of my Taimar project about 3 weeks ago, and due to working away during the week Ive not had a lot of time to play.
Last week I removed the bonet.. bloody heavy!
Then today I thought I would look at the reason why it has been sat for 16 years in a garage, that being the lack of spark and an ignition problem..
So, after a few terminals being cleaned, and a new 12v coil and electronic ignition..
SHE IS ALIVE!!!!
Ive managed to get her running up on the good old easy start juice!!
Im chuffed to bits!!
Now that I know she has a heart that will run, its time to strip her down and send the chassis off for refurb.
The name 'goldmember' is not my choice, but seeing as the wife has fallen in love with the car (saying that the wedges I have are boxy in comparison) then Ill let her name the car!
watch this space.
Stu
P.S, big thanks to Adrian@
PPS, My baby girl also wants mummy to drive the 'gold' car, seeing as my wife has just smashed the Jag to pieces! http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

This must be some kind of classics forum code that I dont understand!!

Goldmember started today with a bit of petrol and a top up of oil, and has sat idling for about 15 mins with no problems or leaks, and she sounds sweet.
Not bad for a car that hasnt even moved for over 16 years!

That's great news and well done!Mine had sat in the garage for around 22 years and I didn't even try to start her - maybe I should have done.
When stripped there was not really a lot wrong. It's now coming back together slowly but hope to hear it running in the next few months.
Good luck with the resto!

A little update
The body has been lifted off and the engine has been removed form the chassis.
The chassis has been stripped back to just the chassis and the suspension is set ready for stripping and powdercoating.
The gearbox is out ready for inspection.
the diff is out and feels tight (not sloppy and loose, no clonking on the drive shafts or prop) and is awaiting an inspection and clean/paint.
The engine is part stripped down, carb is on the bench waiting for a rebuild kit.
The heads are off and inlet manifold ready for cleaning. (can anyone tell me why the followers are numbered randomly??)
The bores and pistons look fine, and the cam and followers look excellent.
Ive found a few minor problems so far.
The top ball joints on both sides are well shot but all the rest of the bushes are in great shape (Ill still be replacing them all)
All 4 brake hoses are shot.
The manifolds on both sides are cracked and the 3 - 1 collector on both sides was done on a friday afternoon by the apprentice! so these need attention or renewal if anyone knows of a source?
The Chassis is off for refurb tomorrow and Ill be chosing the colour to paint it.....
Ill get some more pictures up in the 'garage tonight' thread.

Hi Stu,
Good bit of progress there ! It will be nice to have the chassis back, so you can start rebuidling (always find the rebuild so much more rewarding....) so you can see the fruit of your labour. Do think the chassis should be a distiguishable colour to spot re-appearances of the tin-worm (mine' silver...)Good to hear that engine/gearbox/diff are in a decent (read: not expensive to mend) condition. Indeed a re-bush/uprights overhaul/brake overhaul, part renew will transform the feel of the car (been there...)
Keep it up ! (and us informed)

Thanks Frank
I hope to have the chassis back early next week, but Ive got my second op this thursday so Ill need to get my pal to pick it up for me.
I also need to get my backside into gear and email A@ for some bushes and ball joints etc so that Ive got something to potter around with over crimbo.
Still havent decided on colour yet, might just go black and finish it off with a laquer containing a gold fleck..... we shall see!

A few pictures of my swiss cheese chassis.
Ive decided to get it powdercoated with a copper flake effect, and it should be ready early january!

I hope to be back on my feet for the end of this week and to be able to strip the suspension onto its component parts ready for powdercoating too!

Up and walking about now, hopefully them suspension bits will be stripped soon.
Ive also got the metal flake additive for the powdercoating, so Ill be having a test plate done soon to see what it looks like!
Anyone know what could be a straight swap for the front granada brake calipers?
Ive heard that possibly something from a Volvo will go straight on?

Hi Stu
As you may have worked out mine are a toyota Hilux 1980-82 Petrol model I believe 4 pot must say work very well but as Adrian says limited to standard or good quality ABS pads but I am sure there will be someone along soon with more recomendations that would give you more performance upgrades options on brake pads I know Adrian does a great upgrade for the rear and I am sure he does somthing for the front as well.
