If I have a budget of about £10K in total, what should I buy if I want to:

  • Have a car for weekend hoons, so road legal.
  • Strip it and make it into a rally car, complete with full cage.
  • Replace the wheels, tires, shocks and brakes with much better items.
  • Ideally I want to stay away from bodywork/rust, I'm no welder.
  • Must have a decent sounding engine.
  • Preferably RWD
  • Preferably European
So £5K for the car and about £5K for mods. I need something that is easy to work on, and preferably more of a classic so less electrical. I was thinking:

Triumph GT6 (although might be tight in there with a cage and a co-driver)
Audi Quattro
BMW 2002 Roundie
BMW E30 of some sort
Saab of some sort?

Once the car is done I will use it for weekend hoons, and possibly amateur rallies too. I don't need something super fast, just fun, raucous, and good handling. It will need to be able to stand off-road abuse. I'd love an old 911 but it's out of budget.

Fire away!

If I had £10k to spend on a fast road/track day motor, I think I'd be extremely tempted to spend £6-7k on a decent 944 turbo & the rest on mods.

944 is a good idea. What about the 924, would that take the abuse?

Also, the same money would get a good condition 914, what about those?

I agree in principle, I've just been there and done that with the Subaru, wanted something different, more of a classic.

It's currently 944 Turbo vs E30 325 at the moment. Ignoring price for a minute, which would be easier to work on, and which would have less rust issues? I know the Porsche is pretty well built, what about the BMW?
