Without the skills or time to build (or budget probably) I've been looking at Ultimas currently for sale and was pleasantly surprised to find 4 cars currently available on PH for under £40k (5 if I include the 1996 car - should I?). Question is, which of them would you guys say was the best bet - even better, do you know any of those cars?

Many thanks. Having owned a C6 Z06 and Cobra rep I want to try something which combines the best bits of the two.

They are all SBC so best take a look at condition.
The gull wing sport is unusual but well built I had a look at it a yer or two ago, only problem is the doors don't open high enough to get in easily.

That would be a problem for me at 6'4". I sat in the red car at total headturners earlier and it was very tight. I think I would have to fit a Lotus Elise seat and bolt it to the rear of the floorpan to be able to drive properly. Not sure I would fit in a hard top even then frown

Then you need one with a lowered floor pan, plenty around. If you look for older GTR's (pre 2003 I believe) the rollbars are marginally higher also though not a great deal in it poss 10mm, you can tell if it is the earlier roll bar, you can't get a finger in between the bar and roof, later ones you can.

Well a canam or Spyder has 93 million miles headroom! That should be enough.

Just joking, but someone explain why the Can-Am is always related to hairdressers, cutting hairand perhaps fags. Plenty of high level open roofed cars which do not get those kind of comments.
I'm going to build a Can-Am for ease of life in warmer climates than what you have further north and I'm certainly NOT a hairdresser, nor do I have any liking for same gender sex....!!

I always like my weekend "toy" cars to be topless, hence building a Can Am. The lack of roof should help with listening to the V8 smile Oh and when I get out of it, I won't look like a lamb being birthed, LOL! I've yet to seen anyone make an elegant exit (or entry for that matter) from a GTR wink

the gull wing car was owned by a mate of mine, he bought it from the guy who built it, he then fitted the supercharger and shiny bits, ran it a couple of years, sold it to a local guy who hardly used it. he put it for sale last year, a dealer bought it and sold it within a week, not sure since then.
when my mate had it, it was a fantastic car, he's very fussy and had the front ended painted every time a stone chip got on it, spent a lot of money in the engine and brakes and wheels to finish it off.

Good info, thanks mate.

I just prefer the look of the hardtop is all - it's how I've always visualised my Ultima will look.

Having researched a little more, I think a lowered floor version would accommodate me well enough. None of the cars for sale currently mention whether or not they have one.

Anything ordered from the factory (new complete or kit) post 2006 I think would have a lowered floor (mine did). Don't know when they started shipping this mode before that date though...Ring the factory, they will tell you.

cheers

Nothing remotely feminine about a Can-Am - bear in mind that it was named after the legendary race cars which were largely topless. Personally I wouldn't fancy telling a 'real' Can-Am driver that they were a hairdresser's cars (and frankly, you're a muppet if you think they are).

Take this one for example, hardly an MX5 is it? wink
