So we looked at a house last week and after liking it very very much, we decided to seriously consider moving into it. It's a lovely terraced town house, with a huge garden, very quiet street and with the added bonus it's walking distance from my work.

However I've just checked how much my car insurance would change and it goes up by... wait for it... £850 a year! So since I pay it monthly and have just taken out the policy 5 days ago, they want another deposit of £180 and then 9x payments of £188. That's an extra £100 a month from the £84 a month I'm paying now. That's including reducing the annual mileage from 10,000 to 6,000 and removing the commuting from the policy too.

Okay so I know insurance is done on statistics and I've just had a quick look to see if I could cancel the insurance using the 14 day cooling-off period but all the quotes from different insurers are pretty much the same.

Oh and the car in question is a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso which only has a 1.8 petrol engine and takes 11.5 seconds to get to 60mph.

wkers.

You can cancel a new contract within 7 days 'contract cooling off' can't you? Then back to the comparison sites. Someone will give you sensible quote.

I had a quick look on comparison sites but all the quotes are pretty much the same, some even came back as £3000.

Im sure your all aware but the way postcodes are graded is risk?

but it isnt just your town, or street, its area ie the first section NE12? B14? Whatever.

so even if it is a really good street, it may have a really rough area within the wider postcode?

i know because i have this problem aswell? haha

That's odd: The postcode we're at now and the one we want to move to, are both F*. So why the extra £850?

Thanks for that. I am in the process of moving 4 miles further out of London to a quieter, less built up area, and didn't really think about insurance, but according to this I am moving to a higher risk area which will undoubtedly increase my premium. Oh well...

Given that F* is the worst rating a postcode can have there will be wide variances in premiums within that banding.

Much like the old car groupings a sporty saloon could easily hit Group 20 as would a Veyron, the pricing would be massively different for each car though.

On that list is "refer" even worse than F?
Possibly, possibly not. There will be some wide variances of affluence in some of those postcodes and the insurer will need to know full details before being able to price.

Thanks for the reply (I deleted my post because I hadn't read the link properly, but your response was more detailed).

An F for the first part of the postcodes telly you it isn't going to be cheap, but the last part of the postcode defines the difference between pricey and unaffordable. Playing around with the meerkat can be illuminating!

i moved from a D* postcode to a C, told my insurer who increased it! they justified it by saying because it was a nicer area, there would be nicer cars so therefore more car thieves.

fking daylight robbery!!!
