Talk of automatic tolls on sky news. They can't cut the behemoth public sector money wasting machine so is this how they're going to do it, again making us all feel the pain for the few?

There was a programme on the BBC recently (one of those pro-BRAKE ones) where, according to EU law, all new cars in the next few years must be fitted with some sort of telematics device "to locate you in case of an accident".

Although I am not sure if the UK has some sort of optout it wouldn't be beyond the realms of fantasy to tweak this for autotolling.

Besides, the Galileo sattelite system has to be used for something...

there's a difference between something like 'OnStar' which the main US implementation of telematics and a full black box ( as increasingly fitted to fleet vehicles, emergency many of the big name haulage companies vehicles)..

Unsure about the context of autotolling on SkyNews but quite easy to enforce automatic tolling, see http://www.portugaltolls.com/en/web/portal-de-port... as an example. And very cost effective to setup.

Either way, and unfortunately, this is where we're heading whether we like it or not I think. All sorts of things that we took for granted are being turned into payable services, and perhaps not for the right reasons (wouldn't know really...).

It will be rolled out to the trucks first, under some bullsts about it being fairer to charge trucks to use the road and also charge foreign trucks to use our roads (much like we get charged to use roads in europe) The money generated will be squandered quickly so then everybody else will have to pay too.

Excise duty will remain intact, motoring will just get more expensive.

Sky News is a scaremongering news organisation. It's probably not as bad as they make out because everything they put out has the BREAKING NEWS banner plastered all over it.

Road pricing would probably work for me if they cut out the £250 a year I pay in VED on my Clio and price me per mile. I only do 8k miles a year, if that. But I bet they won't, because there are foreign countries to bail out in the EU...
