You can use something like this, but they aren't as aesthetically pleasing as your solution.

Unless that's not a honeycomb plate and the number plate lights can't shine through and illuminate it?

If it is then yes the mot tester needs retraining ..... bet he roller brake tested it too?

Incorrect if it is a standard plate and non translucent it is legal if the plate lights can not shine through

You can get the correct plate here

It's a normal plate, not the honeycomb one. So he was totally justified in failing it, just annoying as the old tester there never minded.
He took the tasty fake Crome crudely stuck on with tape in good humour though. "At the time of test"

He did roller brake test it, what's the alternative? Is it an issue for the chim?

Shouldn't roller brake test any car with a LSD fitted ....... or 4 wheel drive, they should do the test on the road with a gadget called a taplow meter which measures breaking force.

Jesus, I didn't know this about roller brake testing.

Both the places I've taken my car to for its MOT have roller brake tested - with me in the car doing the braking.
And my diff went bang this summer.

Is there something documented somewhere which I can print for my next MOT ?

Would it had been less agro to have a honeycomb plate made up?

Or do you never drive your car in the dark?

I was also unaware of the issue, and was surprised during my first TVR test when the testers got into the car with some kind of gadget and took it for a short drive. I wondered where they were going!

The best I could find is the MOT testers' manual, available to download here, although obviously the test centre should have a copy. Section 3.7 is the relevant bit, which includes the following words:

MOT testers' manual said:
Certain vehicles may not be suitable for testing using a roller brake tester. Testers should take account of the vehicle’s drive configuration, transmission type and any Vehicle Specific Information before deciding whether a full or partial roller brake test is appropriate.

If additional information is available from the vehicle manufacturer, then this should also be taken into account.

Unsuitable vehicles should be tested using a properly calibrated and maintained decelerometer or a plate brake tester designated as acceptable for the statutory tests, see Sub-Section 3.7B and C.
It's not specific about LSDs, but at least this will prove to the tester that there is some truth in what you're saying. Nowadays I always mention the LSD on the phone when I'm booking the test, even with the test centre that seems to know the correct procedure, just to check that they haven't forgotten! smile

Thanks for your advice, I can assure you it was removed as I left the test centre. I thought my title sarcastic was enough!

My MOT tester claimed that his set of rollers was LSD safe, could this be true? The garage has all new equipment.

I do not want to turn this thread into a witch hunt but the dealer is experienced enough to know that such a plate is unsuitable.
