Sorry but another £4k what car
Discussion
Hi all starting a new job and now doing double distance and a lot of motorway.
I'm looking for something to comfortably carry p to 4 adults and occasionally the dog.
Looking for something diesel as I do a lot of trips across country and need 40mpg plus
So far I'm thinking:
80-90k seat leon fr 150bhp
90-120k bmw e46 320d
Mk4 golf 150bhp
High mileage bmw 120d
What else is there in a 4k budget I like estates and normal hatch or saloons
Cheers in advance

This - but negotiate. It's a tad high at that price.
Don't buy an early newer shape. Check for rust.

V70. Good shout - also Saab 9-5 - The HOT won't make your fuel consumption, but the manual on a run won't be far off it. Diesel will do just fine obviously.
I've just bought one very similar to the MB above - but with more toys. It's a fab cruiser, and a far better car IMO than a leggy W211, of which I have experiences to my cost.
ETA - V70 rear seats are not as big as you might imagine.

B5 Passat Estate 1.9 tdi 130 Highline - it's what I went for
There is nothing exciting about it - but here is what I like about it:
This model Passat seems to be an underated car in the UK - a mate in Germany was staggered at how cheap they are
The 1.9tdi is reliable and punchy enough for commuting - mine is approaching 160k miles and no problems
The estate boot is quite big and nice 'n' sqaure
Any mechanic can work on this engine - the 115 and 130 seem to be the more reliable ones (plus it's all you need in this sort of car IMO, I have the 130 and it'll cruise at any speed between 0.6 and 1 leptons all day, every day).
My commute returns 45-50mpg
It will seat 4 no problem at all, quite spacious in the back.
The later Highline spec gives you leather, heated seats (lovely on these frosty mornings as they heat up very quickly) and parking sensors - chuck a Parrot kit in for your iphone and job done
My interior is standing up to the abuse well and there is not a creak or rattle to be heard once warmed through
Everything still works and all the switches still feel nice and solid in that way that German cars often do.
Based on the SE and with 15" wheels means the ride is good on the motorway - and tyres are dirt cheap
Stereo is decent enough - perfect for my needs
The blue dials are still nice to my eyes
I admit that it doesn't look great, you'll not be casting loving glances over your shoulder when you park up.
Also the handling is no sports car and I don't like taking short cuts across country lanes in it as it heaves about a bit.
Plus the standard headlights are s
te on unlit roads - I need to think about upgrading the bulbs and cleaning the lens (they are going yellow)
But to me it's just a motorway commuter car, so none of the above are important to me in this car.
£4k would get you a very good one. £3k would get you a good one and leave you with change in your back pocket.

Cheers for that mate , I do a fair bit of country lane driving as I drive to the welsh coast every other week which is all lanes.
Anyone got any experience of a 320d estate? Are they any sportier
Presume you mean the e46 shape? Yeah, I had one and it will be more fun on welsh coastal roads than the Passat if you like to push on a bit. Far better balanced car.Anyone got any experience of a 320d estate? Are they any sportier
