I want to get one to save having to use blocks of wood and a normal jack!

I have read lots of reports on the poor quality of the Clarke Ali jack so am going to pass on that one.

People seem to rave about the Arcan one that Costco used to sell. But the only version I can find is a 3tonne steel one. I'd prefer an aluminium one as it will be lugged around to track days etc.

Any suggestions?

Heavy Steel jacks are much, much more reliable in my experience. If you can live with a heavy steel one (i.e. you won't be heaving it in/out of the boot every weekend) then go for one of these.
I regularly have to move mine about so I went for a Clarke 1.25T which, as you have been advised, is a bit rubbish.

As said, SGS. They have some bargains at the moment!

Or if you need low entry then this deal with axle stands is good:

They look a bit of a bargain.

Thoughts on this? http://www.sgs-engineering.com/hydraulic-jacks/tro...

Twice the price! But probably a fair bit lighter.

Is 1.25 tonnes enough?

It'll lift a 2-tonne car unless it has a very strange weight distribution. I wouldn't want to try to lift a Range Rover with it, but then it probably wont go high enough to get a RR's wheels off the ground anyway. smile

They do do a 2.5 tonne version as well, but it's rather more expensive.

Actually, the racing aluminium one for £106 has a range of 85mm to 375mm and weighs 12.5kg.

This low profile one has a range of 89mm to 359mm and weighs only 14kg BUT is only £35. Also lifts 2 tonnes.

It's for my Clio. I quite like the quick pump feature too. Cost I can live with.

If you have a Costco near you they sell a good quality Ali jack or a heavier duty steel low entry as well at times.

It doesn't show on their website?

Costco website is rubbish.

I've got the Arcan one from them and it's really good but very heavy. For my own peace of mind a steel one would be my preference.

The one I linked to above for £35 is much better value with a greater lifting capacity.

They don't show everything on their website.

It's also possible it's not for sale in store at the moment.
But will come back on sale in a month or two.

I'm not sure if they stock the same items in all stores at the same time, but my local store seems to switch between the ali and the steel jack I can't say I've seen both for sale at the same time, but there's always been one or the other available.

hehe

The 12kg one will do me fine. It's only for my Clio and doing the odd wheel change on my A6.

That's the standard height one, the low height one isn't on the website and is a fair bit more substantial at 47kg biggrin

I've got this one aswell but as said....it's a hefty piece of metal! Not being a powerfully built brute it takes some doing lifting it out the shed.

That's the one that's getting very good reviews. But at nearly 50kg it's not what I want to be lugging to and from track days!

Bookmarked to look at the SGS one later. I have a steel halfords one from around 1996 still in perfect order but I do need a low entry jack.
