Why on a car forum is there such a hatred towards private number plates?

Unless its 2 letters and one number it seems that all others aren't good enough for you.

Most of the ones that are moaned about are quite clear what they are intended to say, Yet unless it says ROSS or PORSCHE the according to the 'gods' of Ph, are chav.

Some people take the piss with bolts and dodgy letters all over the place by the majority on here are close representations of what they're supposed to say.
So why the hatred? It isn't affecting anyone? Is it because a lot of you are old and bald and 'don't get it'? Is it jealousy? Or is it because the DRL thing has calmed down you all need something to pull your bangers about now?

Over to you old men.....

They tend to be tacky and a way of 'hiding' the age of your car, who cares what year your car is?

I can't stand them as they just hinding a speedy transaction when selling cars.

I like private plates and don't mind a bit of 'minor' spacing, after all the DVLA advertise knowing that the plate has to spaced illegally to say something. I agree that there are some desparate plates out there with screws etc that are terrible.

In America they call them 'vanity plates'.

I think that answers your question.

I just completely fail to understand the desire to wax one's ego through a number plate, especially as (and I suspect because) they're so expensive. But then I'm a modest sort...

I don't get it either. As long as they aren't misrepresented or mis-spaced then they look fine.

My car is "old" but it doesn't advertise to all and sundry just how old!!

So, I am in favour of:

. (1) plates with initials and round/interesting numbers.
. (2) plates which genuinely have a connection with the car (e.g. TAX 1, ALV 1S).
. (3) plates that (without "doctoring") read as a word.
. (4) Plates that really are old (e.g. NH 3, BTC 413).

If the number and letter groups on the plate that I use on my car were reversed, it would not only show my initials, but the original would have been issued within days of my birth!

Now, isn't that interesting?

If I see someone with their name on a strip on their windscreen I think they are pathetic. Moving their name a few feet down on to their number plate doesn't change my opinion of them.

A reg number is a meaningless plate identifying your vehicle. I just fail to understand why anyone would pay a single penny to alter it.

Do you really believe that? They're less than a week's wage. Unless you are on about the proper ones. If you owned one those I guess you wouldn't be feeding a troll on the internet though would you?

The only personal plates i have an issue with are the ones that are deliberately bastardised by the owner to make it something it's not, be it with dodgy spacing, dodgy fonts, extra "fixing" bolts, etc.

OP, you have to understand that some people are just intolerant idiots.

At least when they post on this thread, it makes them easy to spot. I mean, come on, if someone wants to spend £250 to make their car a little more ageless (as i have done with my 2001 volvo) then what's the harm? The same people would ordinarily be spotted quietly sniggering at any car that isn't a nearly new golf in resale grey. it's no different to the usual tribalism of dubbers=bad, audi drivers=cocks, boxster drivers can't afford a 911 etc etc etc ad nauseum.

just ignore them. some people spend 5 figures on a watch, so what's the difference between that and 'vanity plates'....nothing, that's what, certainly not to the layman.

It is a PH requirement that the following simple rules are complied with. Then you will be PH Pure.

1. Vauxhall = rubbish
2. Audi = tool
3. BMW = orgasm or meh (no middle ground)
4. TVR = grandad
5. Politics = Thatcher
6. VW = THOSE TYRES WILL KILL PEOPLE
7. Driving Gods do not have vanity plates.
8. You will hate your neighbours.
9. You are scared of women
10. You will have no life beyond Clarkson.

Saves all that complicate thinking.

Spending £250 on some means-nothing-to-anyone-but-a-dyslexic-simpleton number plate won't make your car ageless any more than putting your granny in a wet-look bikini will.

It can work the other way, I didn't want my neighbours, and employees knowing my car was brand new , plate soon sorted that out.

I wouldn't say I "hate" them as such, but for me they do sum up the whole "form over function" thing that's so prevalent in the modern car market.

People can spend their money on whatever they want, though - it's their money.

There really aren't many that are names (mine are all words)

I prefer the look of short plates in the same way I prefer girls with big boobs I don't care what others think / prefer.

I can afford to do what I like, so I do - if it winds a few peasants / snobs up - added bonus.

Because they are nothing to do with the car, and everything to do with the pathetic attention seeking of it's owner.
