2 days in Krakow, what to do?
Discussion
Me and Mrs TJ are off to Krakow for 2 nights next week and as it's such a short trip I'm trying to get a very rough plan of what to see and do. Aushwitz is a no go as it's a full day trip and we just don't have enough time.
Was thinking instead of seeing Schindlers factory which is apparently now a museum.Other than that we've not really got much idea what to do in the day, the evenings will hopefully be taken up with good food and vodka!
Anyone been recently and got any experiences to share?

If you do a private tour you can do Auschwitz, Birkenau and Wieliczka Salt Mine in day.
Any recommendations for anyone who offers this service, not sure our budget will stretch to a private tour for 2 but if we could join a group...Otherwise really looking for highlights within the city

We went to a shop in the market square and booked on the first afternoon we got there for the following morning. We were in an 8 seater Merc wagon of some sort. It didn't seem that much more than a bus tour.Otherwise really looking for highlights within the city

We went last December and used this chap to take us to Auschwitz & Birkenau

I would highly recommend him, I've just checked and it cost 300 ZL for the 2 of us and I'm sure that also included the entrance tickets. It works out slightly more expensive than a coach tour but is so much nicer and more personal. He also took us to the Salt Mine too.

It would be a shame to go to Krakow & not visit Auschwitz.
Try the Grzaniec (mulled wine) and the grilled cheese in the Christmas Market.
I loved Krakow - amazingly cheap to eat & drink out!

I've been 3 times now. I know you said you wont get time but Auschwitz is a strong recommendation. The salt mines is a good day out. If you're just staying in the city then there's the castle. There's some great food, drink and jazz places around the main square. Some nice cafes and bars around the Jewish ghetto area too.
I've done a city tour. They pick you up from the main square. A bit touristy but a great way to see the place and learn about its fascinating and brutal history. Schindlers factory wasn't s museum as such the last time I was there. It's just a dilapidated run down old factory carcus with a visitors book but still interesting if you like history.

Just been last week.
We did the Salt Mines and Schindler/occupation museum in one day. Cost us 50zl each for taxi round trip from hotel and back plus 73zl for the Salt Mine tour ( English tour, started at 10am with randoms ). The museum was 18zl I think.
Salt mine took just over 2 hours, the museum took 3 hours. The museum was really good and you could get around in 1 hour but there was no rush.
We did Auschwitz-Birkenau left hotel at 08:30am and got the first (English) tour at 10:30am. Cost us 80zl each for the taxi and then 40zl for the tour. Got back at about 3:30pm.
Really good value. That was with a group of 5 though which reduced the fares somewhat down to around the same price as if you booked a tour. The Salt mines and museum you could easily do by bus or train or tram.
If you do the castle then my advice is to get there first thing as tickets for the royal rooms etc are free during November but are given out on a first come first served basis and are limited. They go pretty quickly.
Evenings we just picked places off the main square at random and always had a great meal for next to nothing. Really cheap food and booze. For me and the missus a 3 course meal with beers and wine was around £15 to £20 each tops. We did the same for pubs and I never paid more than 9zl for a beer, cocktails were no more than £4 and quite often cheaper.

Keep an eye out for a bloke wearing a PH fleece.Anyone been recently and got any experiences to share?
I am out there Thurday and Friday on business and my wife is then joining me for the weekend.
Having been before I would certainly suggest Aushwitz and the Salt mine.
Restaurant wise, I can thoroughly recommend this place for some excellent Polish cuisine:

It's roughly between the main square and the castle.

Just got an email back from Bob, who is quoting 460zł just for the taxi for the 2 of us, and 686zł all in which is a bit more than I was hoping for. Will have a look at the tours I guess but wanted to be able to go at our own pace rather than wait around for a coach load of peoplehttp://www.bobtaxi.com.pl/Angielski.htm
