Is the GL too big?
Discussion
Go for the GL. In Florida I always hire the biggest car I can - roads are wider, parking spaces bigger, fuel cheaper, other cars on the road much bigger. I once got a RAV4 in Florida, it felt tiny!
Enjoy yourself and rent something suited to their roads that's a bit different from the norm!

In terms of Mercedes they have C, E, GLK, GL. They're the only ones I like. There are US mammoths like the Navigator and the Escalade. Then there are Mustang and Camaro that I'd like but can't fit luggage in.
2adults and 2kids.
Reason I was considering GL as its the most expensive retail wise and hence would presumably be most luxurious inside.

We ended up with a 450 GL in Florida earlier tis year, absolutely fantastic.Plenty of power lots of toys and very comfortable, fuel went down at an alarming rate but it's cheap so not really a problem. Never found it to be too big, even when parking in a multi storey car park. The GLK by comparison is quite small, sort of BMW X1 size.

If you can handle a RRS then the GL will not be an issue and you will be fine - however, you will have one challenge........... you will need to get used to the fact that it does not break down.
Until it does, then be thankful you have a warranty when the guy at the MB dealership tells you how much that would have cost you otherwise. Ask me how I know

Looking at rental cars in Florida and they are offering a GL450 and a GLK350. Id never even heard of the GLK so I googled it and it's a midsize SUV (think SLK vs SL).
Anyway, the dimensions of the GL are monstrous. Are they ok in reality, or should I go for the smaller GLK?
I go to Florida quite a bit and the GL will be fine - last year we got a Cadillac Escalade and never had a problem. Typical parking spaces are huge. GLK is like BMW X3.Anyway, the dimensions of the GL are monstrous. Are they ok in reality, or should I go for the smaller GLK?
Pretty standard big SUV from rental companies is the Chevy Suburban and that's quite a lot bigger than a Merc GL.
May I ask which company you're looking to hire from, and how much they are? Merc's from the main rental companies are usually stupidly expensive although I did read that Sixt was doing very good prices (for MBs) as they try to establish themselves in the US.
Have you booked it? Try the CDP code 758672.

Hertz had loads of GLs at MCO earlier this year. I didn't notice any GLKs (and they're so ugly they're hard to miss).

hi there.
i am sure that you will find the GL perfect, and you soon forget about its size and appreciate its road presence and feel well protected when laden with the kids; it's mostly my missus that cuts about in our GL450 and she is not in the slightest daunted about the size although as someone said i thought our ML was huge untill the GL was parked beside it....you couldn't even see the ML when looking side on at the GL!
good points: the GL's with the V8 4ltr diesel engine are just awesome, with so much power its mega quick; i have ours remapped so it has approx 400bhp, however i did this as the fuel economy inreased about 12% by doing so; on a recent 1500mile trip we averaged about 29mpg which is pretty good for the size of this thing and we were carrying 5 of us and all the luggage that goes with that...
bad point: when the fantastic adult sized 3rd row of seats are up, the boot size is seriously comprimised.
i'm sure the GL will be a fantastic travel vehicle on your hols, and may even inspire you to get one when you get back!
enjoy your trip!
