After a decent sparky or someone with soldering skills to remove and replace a chip on my current snotters ECU. Any suggestions for someone not too far from Headingley/West Park?

If it wasn't such a critical part I would do it for you but my soldering skills probably aren't up to chips and ECU's.

wink same here, then again I managed a D in my DT Electronics GCSE which is why I am not even considering to attempt it myself. Its a 28 pin chip that needs removing and replacing with a copy of spoon remap. Might have to open up the Yellow Pages and ring a few places to see if anyone is willing to take it on.

Kirkstall Auto Electrics can be recommended if you're looking for someone commercial to do it. I'd offer also but even though my soldering skills are OK it's a pretty critical part so wouldn't want to screw it up.

can you show us a picture of the chip, and the important part do you need the chip saving?

For instance if it is a Surface mounted QFP '4 sided chip' its very easy just to run along the top of the legs with a scalpel the remaining legs can be easily removed. bit of solder wick and new one goes on easy with a soldering iron.

with a hot air blower and nozzle you can remove very easily and save the chip. might be able to get something suitable from maplin cheap enough. Can be done with a soldering iron but id do a lot of practice first on some old pcbs.

if its a through hole chip dual inline package ect ect very very easy to replace but they are usually in a carrier and you just plop them out. actually all manner of chips are seated in carriers.
