What happened to that 246 Dino Replica Thread?

It WAS advertising....
But if he had taken out the 'contact me if you are interested' part then it would have been a great build thread!A Ferrari replica with a Ferrari V8 and transaxle would have been very cool and the workmanship looked excellent.
Could the text have just been edited? I've seen worse 'advertising' threads on PH!

No idea. Just saying, that's all.
Stuart Mills used to have such threads removed all the time. Can't have one rule for one, one for another..
I agree, Ferg. Just think we missed some 'quality' with this one...Stuart Mills used to have such threads removed all the time. Can't have one rule for one, one for another..
If we haven't scared him off, perhaps he'd like to re-post but being a little more 'careful' with his phrasing?

Which is why I started this - LOL!

Perhaps start another build thread?
Looks great!
Hi there, I don't think it would be a good idea to start another build thread as I do not want to upset anyone else. I wasn't meaning to advertise I was merely asking for some ideas on possible cheaper running gear alternatives as the Ferrari running gear is not an option for everyone. I personally do not like the idea of any other running gear in such a pretty car but everyone has their own tastes. Thanks for your interest.Perhaps start another build thread?
Looks great!
You're fine and a build thread will be well received on here, if you err on the side of caution with anything that might be construed as advertising
For me, the engine that makes the most sense has got to be the Alfa V6! Italian, character and soul - perfect fir for a V6 Dino replica I would have thought!
If you wanted to mount it longitudinally, some came with transaxles, didn't they? If not, perhaps a 33 transaxle bolts straight on, helping the budget. Then again, Audi boxes (and their V6s) are a cheap, easy find in most scrappys!

OK I will have a think about a build thread but if I do it will be my own car which I am hoping to start on soon. I did a build thread for the one I have just been buildng on another website and it was very well received. I already have the running gear for my one from a Mondial 3.2 QV Cabriolet. This is already stripped and I might be using the chassis but modifying it, as the engine is all mounted in a removable cradle which drops out the bottom making any engine out work a lot easier. I have a few original old Ferraris and getting an engine out the top is quite a squeeze. I have got to do some serious measuring as the main engine bay tubes on the Mondial are wider apart which makes the overall track wider but it might still just sit under the 246 arches, as the thought of wide arches on a 246 is not a good one. It is the most beautiful car Ferrari ever made and does not deserve to be messed around.

I have had a few people suggest the Alfa V6, the problem is the Ferrari gearbox is under the engine whereas the Alfa box is on the end. This means adapting the chassis tubes which I am reluctant to do at the moment. In line engine layout is a possibility and I had thought about the Audi V6 however I have never been into modern cars so would need to check some measurements to see if this can be fitted as the 246 engine bay is quite short. The only problem is the more modern the running gear you use, then the more electronics are used and this can cause problems later with fault finding etc. I like to think that most kit car owners like to service and maintain their cars by themselves so I prefer older simpler running gear. Is it just me or does this make sense ?

I think a budget-minded option is always good for your average builder, as long as they know they can upgarde, later.
I don't think you'd have to worry about 'too many' electronics on the early, 12v Alfa V6s - they were pretty basic.
Are you hoping to mount all engines transverse in the chassis? If so, the Alfa V6 was definitely available on a FWD 'box.
A longitudinal Audi engine and 'box would be good, if you have space - otherwise how about a Ford V6 from a Mondeo? The Duratecs are meant to be cheap and good. If you need a very small/ light engine then the Rover KV6 could be an option and could be mounted with the standard 'box, transverse in the chassis and I bet they are buttons in a scrappy! I believe people were also using the KV6 (I want to say someone like QED) for hillclimb and you can get quite a lot of power from it!

I will have to look into the early Alfa engine if they are fairly basic as far as electronics go.I think a budget-minded option is always good for your average builder, as long as they know they can upgarde, later.

The problem is if the chassis is modified to take the Alfa V6, it then wouldn't be correct to fit a Ferrari engine if that was wanted later. I have attached a picture of the stripped out Mondial which shows the engine setup and also a couple of pictures of the Dino chassis showing the engine bay layout as the chassis tubes are close together causing a problem with an engine that has the gearbox on the end.
This is where a possible Audi style in line engine with box might work, just depends on the length of the engine. I have a race spec 302 Ford V8 here with Renault box as removed from a wrecked GT40 replica that I broke up, that would be good fun in a Dino but I have measured it and it is a bit to long from the driveshafts to the front end. It already has an electric water pump fitted so is as short as I can get it but it would stretch into the cabin which I do not want to do. I have attached a picture. Are there any good pictures of the Audi engine and box about with some possible dimensions ?
Actually talking about the old 302 V8, I might as well put a few pics in this forum of the GT40 and see if anyone recognises it as I would love to know what has been done to the engine, it certainly looks like some serious money was spent on it.
I am not keen on Rover engines, I had an S1 Elise for many years and had some immobiliser problems with it, hence not liking modern electronics. The engine was no trouble at all but as usual it was the electronics that let it down unless there are some after market setups.
I you can't use the 302 and would think about selling it, I am in need of one for my GT40

Well, Audi now do a 'box that has the driveshafts almost inline with the clutch, inside the bellhousing!
So, that might give you more room/ chassis length to play but I think the Audi engines are pretty short, anyway.
I'll tell you who knows about these sort of things - OlberJ. See if you can find him in the member directory (Olie) and point him in the direction of this thread.
He was looking at using the new style Audi 'box in one of his projects and has lots of dimensions etc.
If you need a really short engine but want a V6, what about the VW VR engines?

Another option which would help with space is either a 3.4 Mondial/348 engine and gearbox. These are mounted longitudinal but use a transverse gearbox with the clutch at the very end of the box, so the driveshafts are close to where the clutch would normally be on a standard rear engined layout.
