....when I took the Y piece off and the precats fell out. At last on thing that has gone right! Water hoses and pipe removed along with swirl pot, to be polished up. Alternator/coil removed, new ones ready to go on along with new leads set, dizzy and rotor. PAS rack removed and ready to be shipped off for a refurb. New plugs, BPR6ES, oil filter, fuel filter and valvoline vr1 ready to be applied. Full ACT induction kit and K&N already in place. AT fluid also ready to go in. So the engine bay clean up has started in earnest.Next up will be a engine degrease to work out were my leaks are coming from but I recon its the sump and PAS system so it will be off with those shortly. Not sure what I will be doing with the rocker covers and plenum yet but have desires to polish them up instead of painting. Then it will be one of Clives Y pieces and rebuilding once I have painted the visible chassis areas with POR 15. Only had the car a short while and I am loving the tinkering although the Mrs recons I could have saved a few bob and just bought myself a meccano set instead as I spend more time under it than in it. Anyways any useful tips and suggestions whilst im at the dismantling stage is welcomed.

Depends on who is doing the coating, not pleased with mine at all as the finish barely lasted a year and looks pretty poor. When I questioned the coating company who did the work [not the supplier who was as helpful as could be and a good guy] he said he'd do it again, FOR FULL PRICE! I told him to **** himself and I'd take every opportunity to tell people of my experiences with them. Sadly, you'll have to e-mail me 'cus of name/shame thing.
Tri2Tri, good luck with the polishing mate, it can become obsessive thumbup

The thing is I didn't have to take the manifolds off to get at the precats as on removing the Y piece the precats were in bits and just fell out....Manifolds still in situ. Blessing in disguise from what I have read. So to be honest having ceramic coating on the manifolds can wait until I really have to remove them for other reasons. Mind you I have thought about using POR 15 black velvet on the manifolds from the rear of the precat area upto the Y piece joint to tidy those up a bit.

Noticed some slimy sludge in the breather hose that runs between the flame trap and plenum, is this something to be worried about. Not had the plenum off as yet.

Take off the hose give it a degrease same with the flametrap inspect the wire gauze inside it will do no harm if you degrease that aswell .. The plenum will have some deposits but will easily clean up while it's off get the autoglym polishing those intake trumpets on the inside as much as you can. A mirror shine is achievable smile

So the slimy deposits within the breather hose is not a sign of engine wear or something that is about to give out and needs replacing ?

When you say slimy what do you mean?

Is it just thick oil or is it mayonnaise like?

The breather hoses get cleaned so infrequently even if serviced regularly that after several years some oily deposits are normal.
