Is it true that the fag lighter has to work with ignition turned off for these trickle chargers plugged into them to work? I thought it would just charge anyway? will have to check mine as brought the charger now.......

If the fag lighter doesn't work when ignition is off, where would the power a charger is putting in, go?

My 2002 996T trickle "fag" charger works fine with the ignition turned off (and the car locked with the wire trailed through the side of the door).

From experience, a 996.1 (Pre-facelift) will not work in this way only a 996.2 will.

My 996 2002 facelift works perfectly well with C-TEK in the fag lighter adaptor
with the ignition off and key removed

Agreed, my '99 will not charge through the lighter with the ignition off. Instead, I attach the croc clips of my charger to the jump start points in the engine bay. Seems to work.

Bloody hell will have to buy diffrent adaptor now,is it ok to shut bonnet on lead? Also bit of pain having to get in bonnet, lift out battery cover, remove & replace cover every time?Is what do you call "jump start points " the battery poles? i looked on prevoius post & someone has sai something about some leads that attach to battery permanant that clip together rather than keep croc lead & removing cover?

It is quite easy to hard wire, I got a cable with my CTEK which allowed for me to do this - you could essentially go one better and buy the comfort indicator. My mechanic wired it all in so that I had a little attachment in the passenger footwell.

Note the words "engine bay". Traditionally the other end of a 911.

Yep. I keep my engine at the back of the car. Maybe's the OP's car is different ? biggrin

Here's a pic of the jump start points in the engine bay. Easy to get to and it's fine shutting the lid on the cable.
