Get under your car?

Hi All,

I see so many people getting under their cars for what ever reason........using a trolly jack !?!?

Would you?
Is it safe?

No chance. I tend not to even go under a car on a single axle stand - two axle stands and the jack is about right.

No problem getting under the car to work on it, I have cut up railway sleepers and bits of timber to use instead of axle stands.
Failing that shove the wheels under the chassis.

I do, but I cheat- I've got access to an inspection pit, a 4-post ramp, two body lifts and 5x two-post lifts

Sometimes needs must, I have in the past just used the standard jack to get underneath one and came away with all my limbs intact.

It's not ideal, usually I use ramps but if the wheels are coming off then axle stands are a must.

Trolley Jack on its own: Just No
Axle stands and Trolley jack: Yes

BUT on Dad's 52year old Land Rover there's more than enough room to limbo underneath and work with all four wheels on the floor

Exactly this. Only reason I'll just use the jack is if I'm changing wheels (not going under the car obviously) and even then the wheels will be under the sills as soon as they're off.

I'll change a wheel with the car on the jack only, but I wouldn't go under it without it resting on stands.

Biggest thing I've done with just a trolley jack and the wheels underneath the sills is discs and pads, only briefly under the car to unclip and re-clip wear sensors.

I don't tend to use more than one stand if working just on a corner, but the jack gets left where it is, and I use totally over-rated stuff to try and increase reliability - 4 ton stands for a sub-ton car.

Other options include

Using a pit
A 2 or 4 post lift
a scissor lift
or

roll the car onto its side and get to work

Friend of a friend got killed just a couple of month's ago. Professional mechanic doing a foreigner. Crushed. Now he's left behind two young kids. For 5 fking minutes and he should of known better.

One of the few occasions where I'm 100% behind the pro-safety brigade.
