Yesterday visited Bonhams auction in Harrogate. First visit, and some cracking cars, really enjoyable experience. Some stonking bargains!

To get there was a 300 mile round trip. Cue dusting off cobwebs of the 20 year old MX5 and a 300 mile round trip up the M1 with the roof down. It performed faultlessly, 35mpg, and was a refreshing experience after becoming accustomed to DAB, bluetooth, decent stereos, heated seats and sat nav. Bloody great car!

That is all. Just wanted to share!

My car is being repaired after the alternator has gone. So for a couple of days I have a V reg, Fiesta Ghia 1.25. It's only covered 19k miles and is in perfect condition and drives like its brand new. Its taken me back to my early ford days of the late nineties (although the fords I drove were a bit rubbish and had covered nearer 100k miles). It is such a hoot. It is basic but you feel so much like you are driving it.

It's a 1.6 and actually pretty economical. Filled up in Harrogate, 235 miles, 40 quid, 35.5mpg. It would actually have been better, I had done almost 100 miles locally beforehand. That was at 70mph.

My 1.8l NB was terrible on fuel - 20mpg seemed to be the average.

My 1.8 NA would get late 20's on a motorway run (less if running at night with the barn doors open..)

My previous mk1 1.8 averaged 29mpg, since puchase this has averaged a true 33mpg!

I've got a clutch to do on my current diesel Civic which looking over the manuals appears to be a bit of a pig and might take me a few days to do it all. So I'm considering getting something really cheap and cheerful to do work duties while the civic is off the road. This has just made me think I should do it even more!

A 'V' reg too, that's practically brand new!

Ok 'Basic' was meant in contrast to the more 'refined' (that's probably not the right word either) elements and comfort of the brand new cars of today. A top spec 2012 fiesta is obviously better than a 2000 top spec fiesta, but it is normally an unfair advantage because the older fiesta is just that - 12 years older, so general wear and tear make a comparison virtually impossible. However, this car feels new with its low mileage and new feel.
The car is so low too, when sitting in traffic. I guess due to the small wheels.

It feels and drives like an original mini. It's great.

I love the "Errrrr Errrrrrr Errrrrr Ewwwwwwwwww" as the central locking opens!
