Im considering buying a modern classic from a dealer in Ireland and Im based in the UK. Looking for some advice from those who have experiance.
I believe I will just pick the car up on Irish plates, drive it to the UK, get it MOT'd on the vehicles VIN and then send that off to the DVLA for a UK registration. Correct so far? What about insurance? Will a UK insurance company insure a car on Irish plates? Thanks.

You should be able to get temporary cover on the Irish plates.

Northern Ireland or the Republic? NI is easy enough, just drive it over (bought my last car from a chap in Belfast, although it was originally a mainland-UK car). ROI is a little more complicated but I can't help there I'm afraid.

All you need is to make sure the dealer supplies you with a confirmation the car is being exported from the Republic.

Many of the more "unusual" cars here in RoI were originally UK cars anyway, and so can be returned to their previous registrations fairly easily I believe. Both of mine fall into this category, and I wouldn't be surprised if whatever you're looking at was originally sold through a dealership in Britain or N. Ireland
