Any diesel experts on here? Turbo seals leaking...
Discussion
If anyone can help me I will be really grateful.
Long story short, spotted an oil leak on my car a few days ago. Sent it to the garage to be looked at, they've just rang me and told me my turbo seals are weeping. Not only the turbo seals but other parts associated with the air intake system.
The costs to replace/rebuild the turbo are understandably high.
My question is, about 12 months ago I fitted an egr valve delete kit as the egr diaphragm had split. The removal kit was cheaper than a new valve.
I am wondering if the removal of the valve is somehow forcing the oil out of my seals. Is that at all possible?
There is a small (presumably) vacuum pipe that came off the top of the valve that you just leave open and tie up out of the way. Again, could this have caused the seals to start leaking?
Car is VW passat tdi 130 with 99k miles.
Thanks in advance.

All the EGR valve is doing is sending waste gas back into the combustion cycle, i cant see how this would affect the turbo's Oil seals.
Is the turbo "sticking" at all chances are it would be going into Limp mode if it is? As has been discussed recently in a couple of threads the turbos often need a rebuild at about 100k miles or shortly after as the actuator sticks, but again i don't see why this would make the turbo leak oil, I have had this issue on two 130TDI VAG engines and i don't recollect the turbos leaking when they went.
The air intake pipes are a bit weak on these too, if the are leaking the car might smoke a bit, not usually a serious issue though.

What is the mileage on the turbo? Possibly need a replacement or a refurb, I'm sure I've heard you can get a refurb turbo cheaper in Exchange of the damaged one, is there oil in your intercooler pipes? Also how much is it leaking? Possibly just wear and tear, I recently had problems with my diesel turbo and found a good link on tinterweb which I will try and find for you

Funny you should mention about the actuator sticking. About 3 weeks ago I noticed the turbo boost noise seemed to be quite a bit louder, and the car seems quicker. I am now wondering if its over boosting due to a seized actuator? Would too much boost pressure cause the seals to leak?Is the turbo "sticking" at all chances are it would be going into Limp mode if it is? Always comes at the worst time, I had just advertised it for sale as well
Then get a working used turbo and wack that on there.

Mine had a full strip an rebuild by AET in Wakefield cost £220 plus Vat i think came back all very shiny looked like new, and came warranted, labor to swap on a B6 A4 at a VAG specialist was about the same again.
I wouldn't spend £195 (plus postage?) for a second hand one that looks like that.

Thats better than the £845 + VAT I have been quoted so far!I wouldn't spend £195 (plus postage?) for a second hand one that looks like that.

So you would recommend AET then? Its now looking like I am going to remove the turbo myself and send it away to be done.
100%. When i went in to drop my blower in the impression is of a very professional outfit, with staff who are very clued up. Also the staff car park is full of old interesting motors, which would lead me to believe that they employ a fair few enthusiasts.I have since recommended them to a few acquaintances and not heard a bad word back, they are quite highly regarded on the Audi owners forum also.

Obviously the Actuator and diaphragm will be locked up by the way, as in absolutely solid. When you take it off if it still moves OK, that's not your problem......Mr Pies said:

My 130 TDi Passat turbo let go at 130000 miles, so I took it into The Turbo Clinic in Leeds and they did a superb job.
As I recall it was £565 for an exchange turbo, all oils and filters and flushing out and labour. A years warranty is also included.
I know it sounds a lot of money but I intend running the car into the ground so if I get another 130000 miles out of it I'm happy, plus the improvement in performance and economy is surprisingly good.
