Calling telly experts! - Panasonic Viera TXP50ST50B - £999

A good choice for my FIL, trading out of an enormous 15yo Sony CRT?

To be used for normal TV and movies in a normal living room, and the potential to occasionally link up to an iPad 2 for streaming, picture galleries etc.

I'm not convinced he really needs a Smart TV, but my MIL likes gadgets.

I'm sure it is a great TV as Panasonic have a very deserved great reputation.

Thank you indeed, that's gone into pole position.

I'm aware that Panasonic is generally perceived as 'the best' of the normal TVs, but not sure why, or if I or they would perceive the extra whateverness of 'the best' over 'pretty good'.

The other option at the moment is a Samsung PS51E6500EU at £800. Any thoughts on whether the Panasonic is worth the extra 15% ish?

Look at the reviews online and on AV forums. Ignore What Hi-Fi? though.
