We're taking the kids there next summer and so a convenient sandy beach is important. We haven't booked accomodation yet, but will be flying in/out of Nice. Nice itself has a pebbly beach, so not keen on that. I once took the motorail from Paris and we passed many nice beaches West of Nice, but I don't know their names. A resort with a train station might also be handy, if we don't hire a car. Any ideas?

Bandol? Lovely Place with a train-station too! The beach 'Plage Renecros' is safe as well.

Why not go to the Atlantic coast.....amazing beaches and with the breeze a less stifling heat but plenty hot enough too. It's where the French go on family holidays....

Random blog with beach photo's from SW France

Saint-Raphael has a nice long sandy beach.
Been there a couple of times.

We were in Cannes last year, and took a day-trip to Antibes. Lovely place, and when we go back to that region, will probably stay there. Got some great beaches.

Frejus, nice beach but gets very busy. Beachfront diners and bars can be quite nice, but be choosy, some are V expensive.

Yes, I'd say nearly all of the French riviera can be very expensive.
Frejus/Saint-Raphael is well among them.

Early summer season is best in my opinion. Less busy.

Another vote for Antibes. Plenty of beaches, train station, close to Nice.
Lots of nice markets and things to look around. Also a large harbor with a super yacht area you can look around too if boats are your thing.

What kind of size accommodation are you looking for? I can recommend a nice 3 bedroom house in the town centre that we stayed in a few years ago. 5 minute walk to one beach and harbor, 15 minute walk to another.

Here you go

TV, broadband was included, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer. Two bathrooms, the ground floor one has a big shower.
Owners were english and easily contactable by phone.
Only downsides to the place were no A/C and you get the odd scooter go down the road at night but not really an issue unless your'e a really light sleeper.

Would definitely go back there again.

This is the route to the nearest beach. http://goo.gl/maps/elW0f

Sandy beach but rocky under the water, which was great for snorkeling as the water was so clear, plenty of interesting fish to look at. The other plus point with this beach was it was never really overcrowded either, close to a load of nice places to eat too.
The super yacht harbor is just next to it.

This beach was sandy under water but seemed to get quite crowded http://goo.gl/maps/wR9FZ

Stayed here some years ago, right on the beach, great for kids. Just outside St. Tropez
