Is it just the roadster that has a problem with the bootfloor getting ripped up

by the rear axle under load ?

Great cars and yes Vanos and boot floor issues, pretty common and all repairable if not already done, S54 engine not as susceptible as earlier model.

The last of the cars (s54 engined) had e46 m3-derived running gear and electronics, which include traction control... They carry a fair premium over s50s and (while some will no doubt disagree) are sought after for being a little more relaxing to live with when not at full-chat. That said, both s50 & s54s can be handfuls, so check carefully for evidence of accident damage resulting from unplanned excursions off-road...

Accident damage. Most of them will have had an "off". I recall my local dealer's demonstrator had about three and must have been somewhat like Trigger's broom by the time it was released to some unsuspecting punter.

In 11 months mine had new Vanos, new seat rails, new dampers, new brakes, some new switchgear and a new gearbox. Plus consumables and servicing. It cost £17000 to keep on the road for less than a year, luckily nearly half was covered by the warranty.

The main thing to look out for is people on here telling you it doesn't handle because of the rear suspension.

Bejesus...I think the main thing I'll look out for is your tally of replacement parts...

Cheers all...

Although trivial in comparison, check that both seat motors - fwd/aft and up/down are working.
Also that the airbag light goes out, the routing/length of the seat wiring can dislodge a connector and cause problems with the safety circuit.

That was a list of some of the things I had done under warranty, not a full list of where 17k went.

Oh i see, sounds as though you were unlucky & have bought a dog! Maybe you should have had a proper inspection carried out before you bought it ... just sayin:-)

Pals got the z3m roadster. The only problem he's had is with water leaking in somewhere and messing with the electrics. Apart from that it's been great for him.
