I've seen an Evo VI I'm interested in but it has anti-lag. It doesn't seem to have any other upgrades....should I be worried about it? As I understand it, anti-lag sits after the engine, but before the turbo, so does this mean i dont need to worry about excess wear on the engine engine, but the turbo might be under increased pressure and wear? Be interested in people with experience of anti-lag.

Yes.

If you have to ask, perhaps this isnt the car for you?

I've ran switchable anti-lag before on Evo's, pointless on a road car though. The fact it has anti lag means it has a decent ECU in it so not really a big issue. Just leave it off and you won't have any problems.

There are quite a few different levels of set up and it effects some turbos worse than others, just because its there also doesnt mean that it is used a lot. If it was for anythung other than show i would expect it not to be the only modification, which could mean many things. Do you know if its a standard turbi and how aggresive the setup is?

If I where you I would research how anti lag actually works.

There's "antilag" and there's anti-lag. Are you sure its not just an ecu switch making the engine retard the timing and dump extra fuel to get nice pops and bangs?

Proper anti-lag needs a special turbo setup, and unless you have a special turbo designed for anti-lag it'll kill it fast. Also pretty sure real anti-lag is illegal on UK roads no?

Let's not kid about here. AFAIK real fiery "anti-lag" involves injecting excess fuel into the engine when it's not doing much and retarding the ignition so that fuel/air passes unburnt into the exhaust where it ignites on contact with the very hot turbo and keeps it spinning, much like a gas turbine (aircraft engine). This needs a specially designed turbo to deal with the heat and pressure. It is most definitely not a recipe for long turbo life in your road car!

Unless the turbocharger was designed for it I wouldn't use it. All in my opinion of course. Just bear in mind you are doing something to it which it was likely not designed to do.

I imagine the biggest issue would be the increased temperature.

Failure through creep (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creep_(deformation) ) can occur with elevated temperature in metals. It eventually happens to the turbine blades in all aircraft jet engines, however in aircraft the blades are replaced before catastrophic failure. I think creep deformation can occur in the turbine blades of turbochargers through the combination of centripetal force (caused by the compressor blades high rotational speed/angular velocity) and elevated temperatures.

In a very simple nutshell, the hotter it gets and the faster you spin it, the shorter it's lifespan.

Additionally consider that it's possible that the bearings and oil could potentially be exposed to increased temperature and thus maybe functioning outside of their designed temperature range.

Thanks all for the replies. It's an upgraded ECU which has anti lag, but apart from that the only other upgrades are cosmetic.

If it where me I would buy it just because I love the sound of anti lag... cloud9
