So I got myself a Legacy GTB last night, and very happy I was with it too. A friend who runs a Subaru import garage came with me and was shocked at how cheap I got the car. However, I took it our for its maiden voyage today and things have not gone well :-(
I overheated the car and boiled the coolant, however I saw the temp gauge and stopped booting it before I had lost too much, I nursed it home and have been researching coolant issues and head gasket failures ever since. I have come to the conclusion (and my friend who came with me to look at the car agrees, its going in to his place on Monday morning) that I likely had a bit of an air lock in the cooling system stopping it working as well as it should, then it got a load worse when I boiled it. I am really hoping that a full flush and refill fixes it up. It certainly doesn't look like there is any oil in the coolant or water in the oil.
Will have to take the GF's car for our trip tomorrow, wish me luck on Monday!
I posted this in the show off your Subaru thread but another one can't hurt.

I feel your pain. I'd had my B4 a couple of months when the radiator let go on the motorway. Nursed it home in short hops, replaced the rad and no damage done. Going strong over a year later.

Best of luck and hoping no damage done. Nice car, one of the few models I like in white.

Looks nice, hope you get the issues sorted - for what its worth I've had mine for 4 years and 50,000 reasonably hard km and the only thing to go wrong was a sensor.

PS just clicked that it looks like an NZ number plate but your profile says Scotland, do you have the same style plates as us?

Ben, they use UK plates in Scotland so your assumption they are NZ plates is probably correct. He must be in NZ.

To the poster.....Before you go to the trouble of emptying and flushing and refilling the coolant system i suggest you get a sniff test done for possible HGF.

If you do have HGF you only have to do the emptying/flushing once before pulling the head off.

If it's a negative for HGF then you're OK to do the flush.

No sense doing the flush only to find out eventually that you have HGF and may have caused other damage to engine internals.

Yeah, i am in nz, moved out here about 2 years ago, just haven't updated my profile. I will get the head checked before anything else is done, but if its cooked it'll be a few months of saving i fear, either that our crack out the credit card, at least i get nz air points haha.

Pretty far south myself, in Dunedin. Gone even further south today though, down to bluff for a mountain bike race.

How is it in NZ after 2 years?
I moved to France and the holiday period ended after 6 months but managed 5 years before returning.

Considered NZ but only my OHs daughter came with us.

Car looks sweet

Ah cool. I'm in Gore so you were further south than me today.

Just got the call from the garage, radiator is not flowing as it should and some other pipe is blocked so the radiator I'd going to be cleaned out, also since i have overheated it and it is a new car to me we are replacing the oil and filter. All in it is going to cost me $700 (nz dollars). They have done a few tests and the head gasket seems to be all good. pretty relieved that's it, hopefully everything will be fine after that.

Result indeed, getting it back tomorrow or Wednesday and headed over to Queenstown for the weekend so hopefully its all good.

Also, back to the question about nz earlier on, i love it, but i am a very outdoorsy type person. If you are used to the big city lights then you might find it a bit slow, even Auckland is a small city compared to most in the UK.

Nice one, enjoy the trip. I always preferred heading north to Palmerston and through the Pigroot to Central from Dunedin, much nicer drive than going via Milton and takes about the same time (This will mean nothing to most of the people reading this).

Yeah, i often go one way and back the other, the northern way is fun and usually a lot quieter. Would be a nice wee drive to get to know the new car :-)

I really enjoyed Fiji and that's about as slow as it gets. Bit of diving, kite surfing, sunbathing, eating and drinking etc... Slower the better as far as i'm concerned. I'm jealous you guys live where you live!!
