Wanting to buy a Playstation for the kids (and me..) for Chrimbo, but as I have absolutely no clue on anything electronicy gamey could someone point me in the direction of the essentials needed to get started (apart from the actual station gubbins, obviously)?

There seems to be a myriad of extras, different types, games etc. and I don't know what's what!

Cheers.

This is what you want:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-PlayStation-500GB-Con...
Plus you will need an extra control pad if you have kids:

And a HDMI cable to connect it to your TV ( get one from tesco for about a tenner)
When setting the PS3 up you will probably want to connect it to the internet so the kids/you can play online, there should be instructions in the box, if not call your broadband provider and ask them to tell you how to do it (it's actually pretty easy).

You can't pick up early ps3 games pretty cheap these days so best try a handful of the big releases like uncharted, resident evil and little big planet so you can get an idea of what kind of games you like.

You can also pick up GT5 for next to nothing these days. Just get comfy as the number of updates and the install process will take the best part of 3 hours, as I found out last night when reinstalling everything onto my new PS3.
