"Under trays fitted obscuring some under side components"

"Engine covers fitted obscuring some components in the engine. Bay."

One of my cars just passed its MOT. There was an advisory about worn discs which I was expecting, and the two above.

What on earth? The car, like most modern cars has under trays and again like most other cars the engine and other bits sit under a big plastic thing.

This is the car's 3rd MOT. The 3rd time it has been inspected by the same tester. He's never mentioned the trays and covers before.

I know this guy to be a very strict tester. I had an MGF a few years ago which the garage had made perfect ahead of the MOT. Everything sorted. There was nothing at all wrong with it. This tester managed an advisory on (2 week old) wiper blades.

So the top two advisories. Is this guy taking the piss? Or as the garage where he works tells me, he has to mention them.

I would rather my car did not have unecessary advisories on it.

The worn brakes will be fixed.

To avoid further advisories, should I strip the cars under trays, engine cover etc off?

Just to add the car is a 100 per cent standard UK model, full dealer history, as it left the factory.

Sounds perfectly normal to me. He is doing his job correctly.

It's simply to cover the testers back; if he states that something is obscuring other parts, then he is effectively saying that he hasn't checked the obscured parts.

When working in an MOT centre one of my testers used to do "fake advisories" on staff cars, I got one for an appalling CD collection.

Bit of an idiot if he is giving advisories for OEM stuff.

I can do better than that. Last year my car had an advisory for corroded brake pipes. Few weeks ago it had it's MOT and passed with no advisories at all.

I have not done anything with said brake pipes over the last 12 months.

I believe they are just to cover the MOT Tester as they can't inspect items that are covered by the engine covers and under trays, especially as they can't remove anything on the MOT

He's not advising those components as a problem, what he is doing is covering him self as he cannot check parts underneath them. Like plastic sill covers are often advised, not because there's anything wrong with them but because the sill can't be checked for corrosion with them fitted.

ETA: Maybe he has had a scare recently that's made him want to cover his back, or a friend in the trade has. Why didn't you ask?

If you know this person is a strict MOT tester who likes to give out silly advisories and therefore is likely to also find some niggly little thing to fail you on sooner or later then why the fk would you go to them?

As above, take it somewhere else. With the new MOT certificate it shows the advisorys on it which is just going to cause problems and give a potential buyer all the excuses they need to knock the price down when you come to sell the car.

So you'd rather have a bad MOT tester than a thorough one?

He isn't saying that the covers are a problem, he's not advising you do anything about them, it's simply the only place he can comment.

I'm afraid it's more pointless arse covering from the DOT! They might as well add:

"I can't read binaries, so i haven't looked into the engine ecu to see if it's still working"

or

"I haven't got Xray vision, so i'm afraid i haven't checked the status of the lip seals your brake master cylinder"

Rather than add an "advisory" to every single car they test younger than about 15 years, they should just add the "we can't check things we can't see" into the normal test small print etc

Basically, MOT testing is about 25 years behind the times in terms of passenger car technology..............

Wasn't there a TVR owner on here who got an advisory along the lines of "car is too noisy" or something similar?

What is the point of an 'advisory' if the advice is ignore the advice?

There are statistics which the MOT testers are compared against.

% of fails etc

There is also a stat for No. of advisories per test. If the tester doesn't want to draw attention to himself he's best to be inside the %.

One local MOT tester insists on advisories every test.

IIRC my old Leon with 130k got "wear on brakes" "wear on ball joints" - no st it's not new.

However when I came to sell it the new buyer wanted a discount as he believed these things needed to be done.

Needless to say I now use another MOT garage where I've never received a single advisory.

"Engine oil leaks" was an advisory on several MoTs on a Montego I once had. It leaked like a sieve from the usual places and some others as well, admittedly hehe .
