Guys,

Sorry to ask this here ( al la teaspoon thread !!) but I need help.

As I do all the cooking at pugh towers I need a good oven glove ( or pair of!!)

My wife has bought me constant replacements, but they are all carp.

They either don't fit my big hands, or are stupid ergonomically, so you cant remove things from the oven without dropping them, or worse still the silicone glove she bought me last time was so slippy you could not even get a grip of any hot plate or casserole dish coming out of the oven.

I have tried using tea towels, etc, but they still burn your fingers.

I am unsure if a single compared to double ( pair of) gloves is the best solution, but welcome input and advice.

What I am pretty sure of is the stuff you get in M&S and John Lewis, IE joined mitts etc are totally useless.

Just want to know what you guys have found to be best!!

TIA.

Take up gas welding as a hobby. you'll soon have asbestos fingers and won't need oven gloves.

Never apologise for that. My life was made so much better when someone on this board introduced me to that wonderful song. Always, always makes me smile.

The ex's father had a pair of normal looking gloves that were heat resistant. They were white. Worked a treat.

Don't know who made them or anything I'm afraid.

I like to use an oven cloth. Throw it over your shoulder when cooking, it has a myriad of uses and you always know where you put it.

We have two of these

They're as good any anything, better than most, can't say they are fantastic though, the best thing is they have a magnet in them, so they stick to the side of fridge instead of always being missing.

I'm not surprised! Removing things from an oven is neither the time nor plaice for such a thing.

Likewise, I have the pot holder version and it does a good job, I can only presume the oven gloves are just as good.

I find oven gloves too big and cumbersome for my small hands, and to get around small handles, so use 2 squares in the same material as the gloves - probably called pot holders - and find them much easier.

Also clean better.

A pair of gloves will be better. You won't have a hope in hell of lifting a full large cast iron carrerole dish out of the over with one hand.

Standard chrome leather gardening gloves. Unless you're going to stand around holding roasting trays fresh out of the over forever (then go for rose-pruning thickness or welding gauntlets), they do a decent job of shielding from the heat for transferring dishes. If you're careful about handling stuff and don't get them mucky they look smart enough. I've been using a pair for a year and they're still clean. If they do get mucky - move them to work gloves and buy a new pair. smile

I would avoid any type of glove at all costs. If they get wet or splashed with oil or water and you grab a hot pan or tray the liquid will boil and you will get severe burns. You then face the task of removing tight fitting gloves at boiling point from already burned skin.

Chefs use simple DRY cloths for a reason. It's much, much safer.
