Over the last few weeks I've noticed I get an ache in the lower back, mainly the right side, after approx four to five hours sleep. I then have to get up and after a while the ache/pain subsides enough for me to go back to bed again.

I was hoping it was only a chill that I could treat with a hot water bottle, however it's hanging about too long for that.

Any ideas?

Do you get much exercise? Most all back related aches and pains I have ever had usually start when I am into a lazy period of my life. Started exercising again and they have gone pretty soon.

I used to jog/run up to about 3 years ago, but stopped because of work hours. I now walk too and from work, up and down hills, but have started jog/walk in the last week just to get the heart and lungs working.

I can be up two or three times a night for a wee, but I've always had a weak bladder problem.

Sounds posture related - Erector Spinae/Quadratus Laborum area.

Do you stoop when you walk? And I'm guessing you have a deskjob? Do you sleep on your back, side or front?

Try walking with your hands cupped behind you back like the Duke of Edinburgh. Forces up-right walking posture...

This.

I used to get twinges in my lower back and keeping fit can help protect against back problems as you get older (by which I don't mean 'get old').

Someone told me once the the one thing you shouldn't scrimp on is a bed. Save up and buy the best most comfortable bed you can find. When you've found it, borrow some more and buy the one that's better than that.

Did this and cannot tell you how right they were!

Agree with comment above. Beds and shoes: if you're not in one, you're in the other.

I've waited some time to respond to see if the ache would clear up and it has.

Most likely it was an infection, full flow is back, I'm not getting up during the night as much for the toilet and the pain has gone away.
