You're not planning on spending a fortnight in St. Louis are you? I think I'd rather endure two weeks in Burton upon Trent to be honest.
I work there from time to time (back in a couple of weeks, in fact). I don't do any tourist stuff, staying mainly in the western suburb of Creve Coeur. Parts of the city (East St. Louis in particular) are somewhat dangerous for visitors.
Drive from Chicago is relatively short 5-6 hours, depending on the time of day and is interminably dull. If time permits, you might consider detouring through Indianapolis and visiting the Brickyard (though you will have just missed the Indy 500 if you are not there until June).
MO is definitely American 'heartland', but isn't particularly interesting, unless you have a burning desire to see endless, flat as a fart farmland and a large, meandering, but suspiciously brown river.
There is a chunk of 'old' Route 66 that runs parallel to I-44 southwest of St. Louis, toward Oklahoma City - but I think that's pretty much the extent of things auto-related.
In summary, I'd suggest you be prepared to travel extensively out of the immediate area - or be pretty bored after a couple of days.
