hey guys, this is my first post on the site, i live in Preston and am only 14, ATM i have an off road buggy project that is part of my GCSE, i own a joyner buggy and my project is to make a new frame. thanks to the lovely weather of england, this project is not moving fast. So ive been thinking of fututre projects. One of them is a reverse trike.
Some people may have seen the venom ss, a lot may have but i just started to research them recently. I noticed they have a chain drive system but use a 2 litre superchaged inline 4 cyl. i dont know any bikes with engines that big. So i have been trying to find out, is it possible to convert a car engine output to a chain drive output? or maybe it would be possible to get a reverse on a bike engine. I know you can get a reverse on a harley and the goldwings, but they dont have the performance of engine like a busa or GSXR, A harley engine wouldnt be to bad but how efficient are they on fuel?
all help is appreciated and thankyou in advance.

Hello and welcome biggrin

Ok, slow down. You want an engine and gearbox with a reverse gear, but ideally a bike engine, correct?

It's certainly possible to convert a car engine to chain drive, not sure how practical it'd be though.
If you look into bike engined kit cars there are various add-on reversing motors available. Do you need reverse for the IVA test?

hi, thanks for replying.
i would prefer a car motor as it could power heaters, radio etc. But it also means a mechanical reverse. My dad owned a zcars mini with electric reverser and i hated it. although, if its my only option i would, but because i would have a singular rear wheel on a swingarm, it would be hard to fit an electric reverser on it. i much prefer a mechanical reverse.

It'd be worth a look over on www.locostbuilders.co.uk, someone over there may well have experience in that area.

If it's a trike/quad you'd be better off with a differential, be it live axle or irs.

So could a (water cooled) bike engine. Why not use shaft drive and get rid of the chain altogether?

As I read it, he wants 2 wheels up front, one driven rear wheel.

thanks for all the replies,
about the shaft drive, it would be quite hard to use a shaft drive on 1 wheel swingarm. Maybe if i used on of the BMW shaft drives but im not entirely sure on that idea

Plenty of Japanese and Italian shaft drive bikes available as well.

It's a question of how much torque you're trying to run through the shaft drive transmission?
