Ford V6 IMRC Problems; Cougar / Mondeo Etc

Hey guys,
After a little advice regarding the above. I'm viewing a Ford Cougar V6 this morning and was wondering if there was a visual way to check under the engine bay to see if the IMCR unit works. I don't really fancy test driving it and ragging the absolute crap out the car to find out. Although I probably will test it via driving too of course.
Apparently there's a way to check visually but I'm no mechanic and a bit of a novice, how can I check the other valves are opening etc?
Advice would be greatly appreciated!
