To get sound from my TV into my stereo amp the only option is a digital optical output. So I bought the CYP AUD3 DAC from Richer Sounds and plugged it in, and all was well until I tried watching a film on Netflix. No sound comes from the stereo and I have to turn the volume up on the TV again which is rather annoying. I have also found the same problem with some content on the Freeview HD channels.
Would the reason be that this DAC cannot handle certain HD audio formats such as the one Netflix uses? If so, what DAC can I replace it with that does? If it's not that, then how on earth do you get stereo sound out with HD content?

It sounds like the TV is outputting Dolby Digital for some stuff which the DAC can't deal with.
There should be a setting in the menus of your TV for the digital output format that will prevent this I'd have thought, it may be labelled surround or similar or might be Bitstream or PCM. Bitstream will be Dolby on appropriate content whereas PCM will be stereo your DAC can understand.
What TV is it?
