How many do you do over your run to work.

Probably manual drivers only....

Who does the most based on the shortest distance?

Or the fewest over the longest journey?

If you run to work, surely you aren't driving?

In 2.5 miles I hit 4 roundabouts but 0 red lights on the way in, on the way back it's the same 4 roundabouts and 4 sets of lights (on one roundabout).
So, do we count a block shift as one gearchange or would 2-5 = 3 changes?

I go:

Just roughly; but I also included throttle blips on the change down..
edit - its a 20 minute commute.

I can't believe you never have to reverse. And how many people really change down in to 1st gear before going in to neutral.
It's almost as if you've made it up and didn't think it through!

I don't think even Rain man would count the number of gearchanges in a journey.

Mercedes Enthusiast mentioned the average driver changes gear over 90,000 times per 10,000 miles.

I walk to work, but there is at least one mental 'change down' at a steep point.

In my previous job I could leave my street get in to 5th and get to the roundabout outside of work 14 miles away without changing gear due to the types of roads and times I started so very low traffic volumes.

Now - Lots.

Pull out of driveway, 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, 3, 4, 5, 3, 4, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, 1, park. 4 miles. 5 changes/mile.

When on the bike theres a couple of 6th gears and no block changes.

Then you should need even less shifts. Is there some reason I bike can't be stopped in gear?

I quite liked the topic...

I reckon... R,1,2,3,2,1,2,1,2,1,2,3,4,3,2,3,2,1,2,3,2. (~2 miles).

So about 20 so about 10 per mile. (I have ridiculously long 1st and 2nd gear and a 16% incline - Golf mk2).

If the traffic is good, about 40-60 (depending on whether I have to stop for the various traffic lights and roundabouts) in four miles.
