Mercedes C220 CDI SPORT 2008 mpg?
Discussion
Hi folks,
Recently treated myself to a Mercedes c220 cdi on a 2008.
Looking online at figures of mpg i was expecting for it to do alot better. However i been driving like an eco hippy and struggled to manage 22.3 mpg (all town driving i.e local).
Is this normal, i have just had it serviced also.
If someone could shine some light as to how it should be performing or is that normal?
Many Thanks

I run a W203 generation C220 CDi sport coupe automatic. Around town I'd expect low 30s, unless I spent a lot of time stationary. Cold weather and short runs will affect this.
We recently got rid of our 2002 W203 CDi Coupe Auto whuch had done 162000 miles. The average overall mpg for everything was 39.9mpg if that helps.type_r1 said:
it is an auto 5 speed.
Yeah they are stop start journeys on cold starts.
Well, in that case it's low, but it's not absurd. I don't use mine (C270CDi auto) for local use unless none of our little cars are available. Now and again I'll take it into town to drop my wife off so it's a 12 mile reasonably flowing round trip and I reckon the car is only just about getting warm as I get home, and it'll have averaged low 30's MPG for the trip.Yeah they are stop start journeys on cold starts.
Crucial thing, I think, is to avoid actually stopping if at all possible - seems to take a lot of effort to get these cars moving from rest.
Short answer is you (like many) are not really a diesel driver.
I do 12-15k a year but similar type of journeys as you, didn't get anywhere near book MPG on my 2011 diesel C220, swapped it for a 2011 petrol E200 and get book MPG and the engine isn't even run in yet.
So many people make the mistake of buying a diesel fuelled car when the journeys they do never let it get up to efficient working temperature, and risk other problems such as clogged DPFs also.

That does sound a bit low.
Our cars:
w204 C200cdi -AUTO- which averages 43mpg
s211 E320cdi -AUTO- which averages 34mpg
To put it into context, I drove the E320cdi estate today from cold approx 5 miles through town, stop start and managed 27mpg. Then drove it 180 miles on the motorway and it managed 44mpg overal...that is with a heavy foot and 3rd lane 80% of the time!! 8-)
Check your thermostat and MAF.

Im a manager at Budget Car rental and we have many diesels on fleet including a couple of e250cdi's on fleet but they seem to be doing more mpg than the c220. Granted my journey to work is quite short and it manages 25mpg tops.

I agree with you on that, when setting of it does require effort to set off Crucial thing, I think, is to avoid actually stopping if at all possible - seems to take a lot of effort to get these cars moving from rest.

I think your right on that. In the past its been petrol cars or small engined diesels ive had.

I had a Pug 405 TD - that did only 23 mpg short journey and a Rover 75 cdt that was only 22mpg.However, i have had lots of petrol cars with equally rubbish mpg (montego 1.6/mondeo 2.0auto both 16mpg).
20yr average 22.5mpg@99bhp.
However, my mpg is freakish bad and probably unique so 22 for your Merc is poor as i am sure most owners will get 30/40 with ease short journey

Hmmm...your definition of "heavy foot" must be different to mine! Indicated 44MPG on a 320CDi is pretty good by any standard. Our cars:

I can get low 50's out of my C270CDi on a long steady motorway run but I have to let the car alost drive itself. ANY sort of "press-on" driving absolutely murders the MPG.
