After an awful lot of thinking I've decided that the DS needs to be replaced with something else.

It was always going to be a challenge to make it competitive when our historic rally class includes Elan Sprints, 911s etc.

So, the DS is being prepped to be sold and I'm on the hunt for something, well, competitive.

So far I've narrowed the search down to the following. Not all are obvious classic rally choices but then I've always been a little different.

1) Alpine A310

Pros: French and rare (which is obviously a thing of mine). Handsome. Right wheel drive. Light. 2.7 PRV V6.Designed to take on the 911.

Cons: Rare which means difficulty sourcing parts/upgrades. Fibreglass structure meaning less crash protection.

2) Ferrari 308 Dino GT4

Pros: Its a Ferrari and not many people rally them. Mega rally kudos points awarded. Revvy V6, light, parts readily available (at a price).

Cons: Parts will come at a cost, maybe a little fragile for hardcore test rallying.

3) Porsche 911S

Pros: Loads of parts and uprgades available, perhaps the most competitive classic rally car for the cash. Lots of choice.

Cons: They're everywhere (on the classic rally scene), lots of dogs with engine swaps etc.

4) Alfa Romeo 1750

Pros: Much more affordable than the others. Loads of proven rally upgrades available. Looks lovely. 4 decent sized seats, room for lots of kit when travelling.

Cons: Perhaps not as much of a wow factor than the others.

5) Datsun 240/260Z

Pros: Tough as old boots, real rally pedigree, like the Alfa not too much to buy, loads of kit/upgrades/spares available.

Cons: Its a Datsun. Not very pretty. That's about it.

6) Fiat Dino 2400

Pros: Beautiful GT car, great engine as the Ferrari, plenty of room, medium priced for base car.

Cons: Not many parts/upgrades, possibly a bit big/wieldy for test rallies.

Those are the 6 I've narrowed it down to. I know I fit well in them all (I am absolutely massive - height and width) and have driven all but the Ferrari (though I have sat in one).

So, what would you do?

Oh you little Fulvia rascals....smile

Sadly I've written the little Lancia off. I actually very nearly bought one quite recently but, and fans aren't going to like this, they're simply not fast enough for my needs.

I'm sure someone with deep pockets could pick up a tasty Fanalone and crank up the V4 but there is only so much one can do with 1300 or 1600ccs.

Ben, what about one of these. Not too many around. Emminently chuckable, V8 power/torque/grunt, very tuneable, good room inside + boot. Very good parts supplies. First rate rally history ala Jane Wignall/Kevin Savage et al...

Ferrari.

looks amazing, and rally prepped would look even better. High risk, but so is a DS.

It makes the others look a bit normal

The Tiger's a good shout, but the more I think about it, the Ferrari is a great but bonkers idea. hehe

Glad here is some tentative support for the Ferrari, it is my favourite at the moment too, just ahead of the Alpine.

The Tiger is a cracking car, we were up against one on the Malts, it was driven very hard and very well.

I'll be honest now - the reason the Ferrari and the Alpine are out ahead is that you just don't see them out on rallies. Perhaps for a good reason though wink

I thought about doing that for a very long time. What stopped me is that the Maserati V6 is absolutely st smile

I like the Alpine, the Ferrari promises scary bills but has excellent levels of 'no-one else is bonkers enough'-ness.

You seem to be leaning toward eccentric eyetie metal; what about the Alfa 2600, Fiat 130 or Lancia Gamma?

Lancia Thema 8.32?

yes, yes, yes...go rallying and pretend to be be andrew cowan on the word cup rally, or...

or even, here's one slightly curved ball with perfect credentials...no-one rallies these today, you'll be unique, it has plenty of room for you and chug-along spares, can be made to go like stink, and, it may even get you noticed by Ecurie Cod Filet.
