Frame marking and police-registering a bike

And although I rarely let it out of my sight, I was thinking of getting my carbon road-bike registered with the police. Last time I did this, it was on an aluminum framed bike and they used a punch to dent letters into the bottom bracket. But I can't imagine this would work on a CF frame.
What do they do to mark a carbon frame? Any idea/experience?

Just had mine done by a couple of very pleasant Westminster PCSOs who were doing free tagging in the office carpark.
Their etching is done by placing a sticker on your frame with the serial number marked out by a "mild, self neutralising acid" which leaves the number visible on your frame, plus an accompanying sticker to show it's been done.
No hammering involved whatsoever.

I did something similar with my new carbon beauty through Bike Register. You receive a sticker with a code on it personal to your bike, stick it on, paste on their liquid and add identification sticker to show its been marked. Apart from someone sanding it off its on there for life and so is the registration on the website. You can also list what parts you have on it which can be updated when you log in to the website.
