Hi,

After watching the race yesterday I'm thinking that next year might be the perfect opportunity to take a few days out and go over to Austin to watch the GP. Did anybody go this year and if so roughly how much did it cost? I'd probably go for 5 days, Thursday to Tuesday.

Thanks

According to MRI's 2012 brochure, the cost departing UK Thursday morning arriving back in the UK on Tuesday morning is £1370. This is for flights to/from Houston, transfers, hotel, etc. There's a single room supplement of £329. Then there's the tickets; no prices are quoted but if you allowed for £400 you'd be about right.

Can't help you with costs etc but I can tell you Austin is a great place to visit. I have family there and visited a few times though when I was younger and single.....great night life, with a huge live music scene and tons of great bars. It's a very eclectic and cosmopolitan city bu US and especially Texan standards....UT is a huge university and when I went 1 in 10 of the population was a student which is a massive part of how it feels.

As above.

Austin is brilliant. Great music, great people.

The Continental Club, The Broken Spoke oh and let's not forget about the bats lol.

You must try Shiner beer as well.

Someone I know paid $200 for a 3 day general admission ticket. They also paid the $200 for priority car parking, so they didn't need to queue. They booked soon after the tickets were available as well. Flights were £600 for those who flew over.

From what I read hotel prices went daft, people paying several hundred dollars a night.

Given the success this year I can imagine that hoteliers will be putting their prices up already for next year.

I was there but only on the Saturday. By chance I was working in Houston so drove up and back on Saturday. Couldn't be bothered with the crowds and traffic on Sunday and actually wanted a look around the circuit!

I had grandstand seats which were good, turn 1 looked excellent too for sitting.

Lots of people saying they paid around $500 for a weekend pass with $300 for parking. I took the shuttle from the expo centre and it was dead easy. Shuttles from downtown too. Saves a lot of hassle and if you were downtown it means you could make use of all the beer stands!

Apparently hotels were booked out by January so it's worth booking as soon as possible. They closed of 6th and had massive concerts and stuff.

I'd consider going over for it in the future and making a weekend of it.

I doubt thats true. The race was on-off-on-off around that time, with contract disagreements with Bernie. The race was far from definite to occur. In addition, quite often hotels black-out race dates from general sale until races dates are officially confirmed, and until contracts with bulk/tour providers are arranged. Montreal blacks out the whole of June until agreements are ready.
