Thinking of buying a 2006-2008 XKR
Discussion
After some advice about these cars and this seems like as good a place to ask as any! I have now test driven both the 4.2 XK and XKR (I can't stretch my budget for the 5.0 unfortunately)
I am used to performance cars so the XKR was my preference, but if a nice XK in the right colour came up it would be hard to pass on it.
The colour I prefer is Emerald Fire, I guess by the fact that over the past 2 months I have only seen one for sale, that these are quite rare?
From reading other threads on here, I gather that if you want to mod the 'R' it is quite easy with a pully upgrade and remap, however with the standard XK options are limited and its pretty much make do with what you get?
Lastly, can anyone recommend any insurance companies who give good premiums on these? I am with flux right now (05 Mustang GT) and they wanted more than five times the premium !

Green is fairly uncommon on the newer-style XKs, as you've found. Not many red ones either, most seem to be silver/grey/black, with a few light blue and fewer still dark blue ones about. It's just a gut feeling, but there seem to be more green convertibles about than coupes, what are you after?
I can't really comment on tuning them as I haven't looked into it, other than being aware of the pulley upgrades you mention. In my opinion, the later 5.0 is fairly close to the 4.2XKR in performance terms. The 'standard' 4.2 is obvioulsy slower than an R, and there is a view that it is a bit light on torque. Having said that, it was well written up when introduced.
Have you driven both? People often ask similar questions about the various engined TVRs, I think you really need to try it yourself and decide whether that model is right for you. In most circumstances, a 4.2 could be described as 'adequate'. The R will be a little bit heavier on fuel.
The 4.2 was fairly well developed by 2006, having had the various tensioner etc upgrades along the way. The 5.0, of course, has a direct injection engine and some express a view about the potential for 'gumming up' with the valves, as experienced with other direct injection engines. Having said that, I haven't heard any reports, but due to the age of them, if there have been reported issues, they might have been dealt with under warranty.
Earlier XKs wil have the radio aerial mast on the RH rear wing, later replaced by an antenna in the spolier, changed for my2008 IIRC. 4.2s will have the J-gate gearlever, rather than the later rising knob. It's not unknown for some of the early XFs to have experienced a non-rising
. Whether that affected any XKs I don't know.
If it was me, I'd go for the best overall condition I could find, and if it was an R that would be a bonus.
