Ford Fiesta Stiff gearbox

My parents have a 56 plate fiesta approx 86k miles. I have had to drive it for the first time over the weekend in ages, the longer you drive the car the stiffer the gearbox gets to the point it almost needs two hands to change the gears. My parents for some reason have put up with it. Anyone have any ideas?

it will be the pivt on the the gear box selcter end of the cable remove it clean it put plenty of greas on it

I aint mechanically minded at all, assume a pretty simple job for a mechanic and shouldn't be too much to fix
