Boxter 2001 3.2s buying tips
Discussion
I've got a 2001 986S, i've maintained a full running report over on boxa.net which i've updated again this week. i've taken my car from 55k to 89k over the last 3 years and have spent about 7.5k on it in maintenance (servicing, clutch, consumables), tyres, wheel refurbs etc
if i were you i'd go for a slightly higher mileage one that someone has already spent the money on replacing all the bits that wear out

Hi Nick.
I've had my YR-2000 Boxster S 3.2 for 2 years and my misses has a YR-2000 Boxster 2.7 for 6 months. Both approaching 90k miles.

During the last 2 years with my S I've had it serviced annually (around £400) and had the discs and pads replaced (£800) and had all 4 tyres replaced (£120 each). Sadly the DME control unit also failed, which apparently is quite rare but not cheap when it happens (£800+). I also had the front control arms replaced around 80k miles as they start to squeak when they wear out (common problem). Clutch will be due soon.
I terms of buying advice, the Boxster is very good value right now, which does mean there is some unloved rubbish around. It goes without saying a full service history from a main dealer or specialist on this type of car is essential.
If you buy something with a higher mileage (80k+) then check that some of the big jobs have been done such as break discs, clutch, control arms, etc.
I'd also strongly recommend getting under the car and checking for oil leaks. Most of the IMS issues should be resolved on a 10-year old car, but still worth a check.
Finally - If you want complete piece of mind, it might be worth paying a Porsche specialist to give the car an inspection before you part with your cash. For £100 they will be able to give you a complete diagnostics and uncover any nasties!
Happy Boxster shopping! It will be a lot of fun!
