Consultation on London Congestion Charging - Bad news
Discussion
Transport for London have announced a public consultation for changes they are considering to the Congestion Charge. None of them are good for motorists.
Firstly they want to replace the Greener vehicle discount where cars with 99g of CO2 or less pay no congestion charge with a new ultra low emissions discount of 75g CO2 which means no current internal combustion engined vehicles will qualify. This scheme has been very successful but now TFL has noticed their charges are dropping and wants to move the goalposts to make it more or less impossible to qualify.
Secondly, increase the fine to £130.
Thirdly remove the ability to pay in shops, kiosks etc.
Pistonheads users can fill out a response to their online survey here. https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/congestionc...

I don't understand what possible benefit there could be to anyone by removing the ability to pay over the counter? Racking the fine up even more is so infuriating I can't type how I feel about that without just being abusive. It's already grossly disproportionate to the actual charge and the tiny time frame allowed before you are automatically fined.
From what I can see it's still a case of no payment within 24 hours - £12 fine. 48 hours - wham, £65 (up from £60) fine. Particularly galling when you live in the zone so your normal daily rate is £1 but if you forget you're still subject to the standard £12/£65 fine.
It's presumably a push to get everyone on the pay as you go system which I don't understand as both our cars only get picked up about 40% of the time we drive in congestion times within the zone. The cameras clearly don't work properly so TFL lose more money this way than any other?

I'm in an outer London Borough and 'parking control' has been contracted out to a private company employing African immigrant personnel roving the streets most hours in Smart cars. If there is a Saturday night party in a cul de sac cars will have to park both sides of the roads with wheels up on pavement (not legal we know, but probably the only way) or a Sunday morning football club match, where again if one was to park 100% legal traffic would come grinding to a total halt, again drivers park-up with wheels on pavement. Bingo for the parking wardens - soooooooooo many vehicles to put tickets on in one place with no one to remonstrate etc and make their quota's.Oh i wish it was the 70's again.

Democracy, doesn't work anymore. The county of nottm is run by the tories. despite Phillip Hammond in a pre-election debate, saying "the motorist has been persecuted enough, the conservatives wont be installing anymore speed cameras", that's exactly what they've done and yet the roads are falling apart. As for the labour run city council, dont get me started on them.
There was a time before Cameron, i would never have voted for a smaller party, for fear of letting labour in. Now, i reckon Cameron is a dead duck anyway, so i will vote UKIP, as i see them gaining some real momentum in the next two or three years.

Look, if you can't park without involving the pavement, or without causing an obstruction, then you can't park, end of.As always driving is seen as a right.

Despite my comments people who park a pair of wheels up on pavement (unless specifically allowed by local authority) really irritate me - our road is in an outer London suburb where fortunately most people have a drive so there are very few vehicles parked on the street (this in itself creates an issue with speed of traffic - in 20 years we have had several cars walloped) - we still get AH's un-necessarily parking-up two wheels on the pavement making it difficult for pedestrians. As always driving is seen as a right.
