What is a good large diesel for under a grand?
Discussion
My Alfa GTV is just loving the fuel I am feeding it on 16k+ a year mileage but my wallet isn't
I have an MGB GT and an old Daimler 250 to feed as well so my brother has offered to buy the GTV leaving me with roughly a grand for a diesel.
I was thinking about the little 206 diesels though going from my gtv to that brings tears to my eyes.
I am a fat got though and 5' 11" and a guy at work reckons it would be impractical and to buy a larger diesel, I have to say I have had a nose at a few and do like the bigger cars for longer drives.
I have looked at Rover 75,xantia,c5,406 HDI , Octavia and passat diesels but not sure which of them or indeed another is reliable and not too much of a swine to work on.
I had an old 1.9 diesel xantia a few years back and it was good hence why they made the list.
Taxi drivers favour the 75 and the pug - all I'm after is dropping the fuel cost a bit as I'm sticking in 80-100 a week at times in the Alfa and she has just hit 80k so a shame to wallop on more work miles as she is gorgeous even if a little old now.
Anything 1k or below a possibility?
What's a good biggun do you reckon?

Xantia = Old complex suspension?
You should probably have a look to see actual examples of the cars you can get in budget (PH classifieds(?) / Autotrader) and base your decision on what you fancy and what isn't too old/worn out.
A friend has a Octavia TDi he seems quite pleased with (110bhp, old school engine), after a few initial niggles.
A HDi / other common rail should be a bit more efficient than an older engine, but this is against them being more complex and a bit more fragile.

See shed of the week E-class from a weeks ago. Bomb-proof OM606 but watch for the rust.
This would do the job (although expect it to turn pink in a few weeks)
