what economical car sub £1500 that wont make me want to kill
Discussion
right as much as i like the ls430 its really not ideal for my commute and i have decided i hate spending money on petrol.
so its having to go. so i now need a car that will idealy do 45mpg + and wont make me want to kill others or my self. i dont mind what it drinks aslong as its not an alcoholic !
requirements non other than economy and maybe a/c but suppose i can be flexible on the a/c
any ideas

A diesel Pug saloon of some sort. The don't hold their value, but are usually quite comfy, well specced and good on fuel.so its having to go. so i now need a car that will idealy do 45mpg + and wont make me want to kill others or my self. i dont mind what it drinks aslong as its not an alcoholic !

Plus one for the Saab Diesel, if you can get a 9-3 they dont handle to bad and I could get brilliant Mpg out of mine.

Anything barge-like will feel unbelievably crap after the Lexus so I would go for something completely different.
Puma 1.7. Got 40 out of mine pretty easily on runs. One of the last cars with those big leather seats and a/c should be comfy enough

Thats going from one extreme to the other, you will get a better car if you compromise on the economy slightly, a lot of cheaper diesels are worn smooth sheds with a high price tag as the public think diesel = free motoring, I would go for, at that budget something petrol and not all that desirable that has loads of life left in it, a good wadge of bills and decent, if not epic fuel economy.
You obviously coped with 18 - 22 mpg, so 30 - 32 would be a good improvement and give you more cars to look at.

coped!! ive only had it 3 weeks !! i went from a 1.2 micra that managed 42mpg to the lexus that im averaging about 25 out of accprding to the computer. its been made worse as im also putting fuel in the other car too so 120 to fill the lexus and 70 to fill the other car. the lexus got through about £30 in 2 trips to work and back £15 a day to get to work isnt my idea of fun no matter how comfortable or nice it sounds You obviously coped with 18 - 22 mpg, so 30 - 32 would be a good improvement and give you more cars to look at.

So what you're saying is, you couldn't be arsed to work out how far you drive each day and how much it costs, versus how much fuel a LS430 would use and cost before you bought it?
pretty much yes lol
i was all set on a e38 728 but was finding it hard to find one then spotted this lexus and thought sod it i want a v8
i then chose to only pay attention to the fact it will do 33mpg on a run (it does but my daily run isnt runny enough it seems
) oh and i like the feeling i get when i press the muted loud pedal

Fiat Stilo JTD 130bhp 3DR.
Been looking to get one myself.
£1500-£2000 (£1200 for a ropey one)
55mpg
10sec to 60mph (remap for £150 = 150bhp = 8.5sec to 60)
Group 5 insurance!

No other car for the price comes close.

FiL has one & it's not bad to be honest. He's had some really niggly electrical problems but that's to be expected. Other than that it's not bad. Stupid City button for the steering though makes it feel like there's 50psi in the front tyres.Been looking to get one myself.
