Jesus.

Do they really let these people have internet access?

There are people posting reviews on Amazon saying they are sending the units back because they don't work with the PC off and the first one is not wireless it has to be connected via a cable.

Really?

You don't have to have it connected to a pc (although you probably knew this already). Mine has a NAS with all my music on in flac format, connected to it. I use the Sonos remote (I don't own an android or apple device) and I'm very happy with it.

My experience from buying is was that I spoke to a hifi guy at John Lewis and also someone at Richer Sounds - they both knew their stuff and were able to answer my questions. Then when I saw the sonos stuff in pc world, a chap came over and started listing all kinds of rubbish about what it could do. There's the issue right there.

Technically that is true though.

The first one in the chain has to be wired to the router / internet. Thats why there is an offer on at the moment to get the little Play:3 with a free Bridge and 6 months of Napster.

Although the Napster gremlins have just cut my dealer account off at the moment!

I think that is more a fault of the SONOS advertising machine.

I have had to describe the set up more than a few times to people who see wireless and think it is totally wireless.

So who's fault is it actually?

Amazons won't care, they'll just have a 'return everything' deal with SONOS.

Horrendously expensive and something I would normally avoid......BUt......it works well, looks great and is an excellent solution to getting Spotify to my Hi Fi without having my ridiclously loud PC sat next to it.

Would I recommend it. If you're flush, yes.

That was it. People leaving negative reviews for things when they plainly haven't done the correct research.

I purchased a Sonos Play:3 and bridge a couple of weekends ago and I've just ordered a Connect:Amp so I can use my existing speakers (sold my old system).

I think it's great, yes one of the units (bridge) needs to be connected to a router, but the other unit(s) 'mesh' together to create there own network.

If you have a computer with your music stored on it, that computer needs to be switched on or set up so the Sonos system can find the music on that unit. If you want to use Napster / spotify etc, the computer does not need to be on. Sonos just needs access to the internet. If you lose your internet connection, you can only play music from your computer, not online services.

OP: sorry for interjecting. I too have quite a few Sonos questions that when I looked on their website I can not find the answers to.

Can the Sonos Bridge be used as a general wifi outlet, e.g. to use iPads in the house?

I'm in the process of sorting wiring in a new build house and will have a comms cabinet and patch panel in the garage where the incoming phone line will be. My internet router will be in the comms cabinet and I'll have ethernet connections all over the house.
Presumably the Bridge would also need to be in this cabinet, or can it be connected using one of the ethernet points elsewhere in the house?

OP, sorry again...

Thanks!

Thank you! smile

I've plenty of network points, so I'll probably use Airport Expresses for the wifi on each floor of the house. thumbup
