Does anybody know of a car which uses a gearbox like this? Or somewhere which sells one?

As such the diff/gearbox all in one so you can have the engine mounted with the gearbox at the rear. Like in the old lotus type 72. I imagine forumla Vee and fords would use something similar.

I have found this so far but was hoping to find a cheaper option!

Alfa Romeo used transaxles like that, e.g. in the GTV6.

Porsche 924 /944 etc use a transaxle - they have the clutch at the other end though on the engine, where as Alfa GTV's and 75's etc I believe have the clutch at the back end (so the prop is always turning when the engines running).

Renault transaxles were used in Alpines, Deloreans, Esprits etc too.

Cars like Ultimas have also used a gearbox out of a Porches 911, but flipped upside down (so you dont end up with 5 reverse and 1 forward gear!).

Renault 20 used to be the one to use for mid engined kit cars in the days you could find them in a scrappy, but whether you can find one now....

You can't change the ratios as quickly as with a Hewland tho' !

It's very early on in the project but hoping to do a custom build like a tiger era.

So it would not be road going but would need to handle a bit of power but nothing crazy.

Transaxle with high torque handling capacity is found in every Corvette built since 1997

The box in the picture looked so compact I didn't realise that it was supposed to be mid-engined!

Rover V8s and Renault 30 gearboxes always used to be the default combination, but these days I'd imagine that the Audi option must be worth investigating. Probably easiest and cheapest to find a donor vehicle and treat the engine and box as a unit rather than cobbling bits together.

I will keep a look out for a second hand Hewland but the Audi option looks promising.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

The 944 box has a bell housing on the front of it, not sure if its big enough to fit a clutch in but could be.

It almost looks like a space for a second clutch!

I have one in the garage but cant get at it to photograph it.
