Anyone had chassis work at David Geralds ?
Discussion
As the title. Can anyone recommend their work. I have a holed outrigger. Had work done there before which I was pleased with but not chassis / welding.
Understand they do restorations so the quality should be good. Chassis parts are fabricated, they don't use the prefabricated outriggers that are available due to differences in vehicle dimensions (surprise surprise with a TVR). The fact that they knew that and did bespoke work gives me confidence.
Cheers.

Seen several chassis undergoing remeadial work at David Gerald's when my car has been in for work, so its not a new thing that they do and as they are now combined with clasic racing I'm sure they can do any chassis work easily.
Adrain Venn when asked about work seemed to be snowed under when I enquired and didn't want to take anything new on.

Cant comment on David Gerald for chassis restoration but, very much in the same neck in the wood, is Adrian Venn, adrian@ at Exactly TVR Coventry, superb work and at a more competitive price!! No hesitation to recommend whole heartedly.
Thought I was getting an answer straight from the horse's mouth there with your profile name. Checked your profile and saw you were in Worcestershire but then saw your car, lol. Thanks for the recommendation. Looked at Exactly TVR's website. I presume the lack of quality on the website is because they are focusing on the cars !rigga said:

This was the problem with another recommended repair place. They weren't able to do much before May ! I was also a bit put off with the answer to my query about what type of paint would be used to protect the chassis "it's a bit like Hammerite" lol. I was expecting something a bit more high-tech as the bill would be 4 figures.Adrain Venn when asked about work seemed to be snowed under when I enquired and didn't want to take anything new on.

I dont think Adrian is much into computers but the outrigger repair work (done via a partial body lift) was superb. If you drop me a PM with your mobile number very happy to chat about Adrian's workSJS357 said:
Hi Matt
Don't know where your based from your profile.
But as Norman says above, DG (:@) no idea.
But I'd highly recommend RT Racing in Sheffield.
You can see from my rebuild forum, A1 work.
Cheers
Simon.
RT have my cerb chassis for some extensive repairs ATM. Would deff recommend them over the other Sheffield indy.Don't know where your based from your profile.

yikes...the welder who did that and sells you this kind of work needs to get a
Yes, that looks a bit of a mess (although I am not familiar with a cerbera chassis layout).
DJsteveC, is that what it was like when you took it there or is that the repair ? Looks like the smaller diameter tube has been welded in to the diagonal and has pushed the tube coming out of the foreground along the chassis to a differnt point than it used to be at (the circle of weld) - why was that done ?

Adrian doesn't like to shout about his work and probably hasn't does much to his website recently. Suffice to say he does a great job at reasonable cost, but is generally very busy, so as he doesn't advertise the fact he must be doing something right.

Fair comment. This is one of the problems I have. All the good ones are busy into 2013 but I have a daily driver that needs chassis work so can't really wait that long. Maybe I should wait and buy a cheap runabout in the meantime.FFG

The small section "plugged" into the diagonal tube was to make up the shortfall when the outrigger tube was welded into the wrong place against the box section. The outrigger hasnt moved as such, just welded in completely the wrong place.
Theres plenty more lack of welding pics from RT after it was blasted.
Main point being body on/partial lift outrigger replacing is running the risk of work like this;

Good grief. Those pics are really scary, had the car been MOT 'd with the chassis like that?
Almost as bad as the "fiberglass" Chim.

Yup passed 2 MOTs in that time, one by previous owner (I think, at same garage that did the outrigger, but will need to rummage through paperwork to confirm) and one by me at a totally different indy. Much application of waxoyl combined with road grit/dirt hides many an issue. From the underside of the car you simply wouldn't be able to tell that the top side of the tubes wasn't welded. Structurally the weld and metal is solid, so poking hard with a screwdriver wouldn't give you any info either.

Neither the previous owner, or myself were aware of this until I took the body off to repair other chassis corrosion, I certainly wasnt expecting this and has of course bumped my bill up a fair bit.
Obviously PH name and shame wont allow me to warn anyone of where this was done, Facebook however doesn't have this policy, so you can see on the Cerbera page there or PM me. The owner of said garage was very unhappy about my posting of pics and warning people away from having body on/partial life outrigger replacement at his garage, and was going to ascertain exactly what was requested by the previous owner, not heard anything back yet. I doubt the previous owner asked for welding of that poor quality somehow.
Conversation with RT was as amusing as it was concerning in that by their experience, they have never seen a worse outrigger replacement and was frankly useless in an impact situation.

To return to the question. I had outriggers on my 4.3 Griff replaced by EG's about 18 months ago. Body off
enabled me to have a good poke round whilst I could to see if there were any other hidden Gremlins.
Fixed price, on time, no problems. Should be good for quite a few more years.
